Christopher Hitchens on Thomas Jefferson

November 9, 2005 | By Charmaine Yoest

Met Christopher Hitchens today. . . very interesting. More later. Here's a quick hit: my favorite quote of the day. Talking about Jefferson and the Declaration, Hitchens said "life" and "liberty" were obvious, but that "the pursuit of happiness" was an interesting addition and no one knows quite where it came from.

He said it was like adding gin to campari. In his typically laconic way.

You know,You meeting people that I want to meet is starting to get in the way of how much I like you...;-)

I can't wait to hear about him!

*I thought I had already posted this, but I didn't see it!

RWS: I'm going to have to start bugging you to come to CPAC! It's the only solution.

As a UVA grad you should know Jefferson ended up with the happiness platitude because he was only looking to complete the sentencse with anything but what John Locke used: property.
