Monday Night Football Blogging: How Do They Do That?

November 7, 2005 | By Charmaine Yoest

I am a bad mother. I asked the Dude why I should let him stay up to watch the Colts vs. the Patriots and he pointed me to the cover of Sports Illustrated and said simply, "Because it's the duel. Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady. Silly Mommy."

Makes sense to me.

So, here's the question. How do they do that??!! Peyton Manning lofted this one pass halfway down the field -- 30-some yards -- to Dominick Rhodes -- and I just want to know how they know someone from their own team will be there to catch it.

I'm serious. How do they do it when the pass is that long?

They run set patterns. It's called a route in the parlance of football. This is what they practice day in and day out. It becomes somewhat rote, muscle memory. Pretty amazing stuff imho.

It's one reason I love football -- it looks like magic. When I was jogging recently, my son and I were practicing his passing and catching and suddenly I got it! I've played catch with him before, but it is one thing to do it when you are both standing in place, but once I tried to do it while we were both running, I saw how hard it really is.

Charmaine, do you have to rub it in? Huh? Do ya have to?

Actually Chris, we were cheering for Tom Brady!

How do they do that? . . . . . . . . . they practice it over, and over, and over. And if they are successful, they get paid obscene amounts of money . . . . . . . .to be able to do it again.

Your live blogging has inspired me to desire a laptop to acquire so I can live blog the Longhorns games...and March Madness. It occurred to me the other day that I could be live blogging the game, combining two of my favorite things. Thanks for the inspiration.

Looking forward to reading about your boy's next game.

I think of you when I see the ads for the Geena Davis show (can't remember the name).
