Katie Couric Doesn't Want Single Mothers in War Zones

Katie Couric recently refused to go to Iraq. She gets this right,

Katie Couric, who takes over the CBS Evening News in September told Access Hollywood that at this point, she would not venture into the Middle East hot spot.

"I think the situation there is so dangerous, and as a single parent with two children, that's something I won't be doing," Katie said.

Couric lurches into the truth: War zones are not safe for anyone. Especially for moms and the kids left behind.

Elaine Donnelly, President of the Center for Military Readiness reminds us that,

To date 60 women have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq since 9/11. By contrast, only 16 women killed in all the years of Vietnam, most of them nurses. In the First Persian Gulf War, 33,000 women were deployed, but only 6 perished due to scud missile explosions or accidents.

Women should not be killed in combat.

No single mother with children should go to war. Not Katie. Not Lori.

if a year ago the army stated that no single mothers could be deployed to Iraq - that Katie would have complained that the army was trying to keep them from advancing in rank.

Equal rights, equal responsibilities, all volounteer military. Enough said.

Of course you're right on this, but personally, I think that _no_ single person with dependent minors should be on active duty. I'd say sent to a war zone, but that wouldn't work, so better not in the military - active or reserve - at all. You have minor dependents? want to volunteer? find a spouse who's willing to be a full time single parent. I know - ain't going to happen, but that's my opinion. When you have kids, stuff changes.

So where does it stop? BS aside, the "family card" is a well played one through every deployment. As a 17 year single military member, I may be accused of bias, but the facts stand. You made the choice to procreate. You took the oath. You volunteered. Eat it like the rest of us. Your spawn is your responsibility. It does not give you a free pass to hand your load over to your buddy.
