In return for this vast territory, the United States gave [Mexico] $15,000,000 and assumed responsibility for paying $3,000,000 in claims of American citizens against the Mexican Government. A large body of public opinion in the United States had opposed the war against Mexico and felt that the Southern republic had been treated badly. The territory desired by Gadsden and his group was then a sort of no man's land, experiencing frequent Indian raids. The United States wanted to make certain "boundary adjustments"; Mexico needed money and wanted a settlement of her Indian claims against the United States; and Gadsden and his friends wanted a route for their railroad. In 1852 Gadsden agreed to pay Santa Anna $10,000,000 for a strip of territory south of the Gila River and lying in what is now southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona. Many Americans were not especially proud of the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty and considered the price of the Gadsden Purchase as "conscience money." The Gadsden Purchase has an area of 45,535 square miles and is almost as large as Pennsylvania.

Mexico reconquers California? Absolut drinks to that!,

The latest advertising campaign in Mexico from Swedish vodka maker Absolut promises to push all the right buttons south of the U.S. border, but it could ruffle a few feathers in El Norte.

The billboard and press campaign, created by advertising agency Teran\TBWA and now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an "Absolut" -- i.e., perfect -- world.

The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California.

Following the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo saw the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México ceded to the United States to become modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. (Texas actually split from Mexico several years earlier to form a breakaway republic, and was voluntarily annexed by the United States in 1846.)

The campaign taps into the national pride of Mexicans, according to Favio Ucedo, creative director of leading Latino advertising agency Grupo Gallegos in the U.S.

When Your Business Blogger was driving our monster SUV with the Penta-Posse from Virginia to Arkansas, we heard a number of foreign language radio stations.

Mike Huckabee for PresidentEveryone wants to come to America. (And that would include my grandparents from Poland -- English was their second language.) They came in legally through Ellis Island.

It was a pen and paper system the clerks used back then. It is not much different today.

To get change in today's political climate in the presidential race, people today must like, must trust their new president. Huckabee is not only likable. He can be trusted.

He does not change his positions for political expediency. He has a consistent position on pro-life. He really knows how to hunt and use a weapon -- and knows the feel and smell of gun oil. Huckabee has always been in support of the GOP platform and is in support of the marriage amendment -- the marriage between one man and one woman.

Huckabee can be trusted with bringing change. Especially on immigration.

The Huckabee Immigration plan is simple:

Build the fence.

Modernize the application.

Everyone waits their fair turn in line.

The Huckabee Plan, The Secure America Plan; A 9-Point Strategy for Immigration Enforcement and Border Security has details on his website. But here are the basics.

The overview: Implement a broad-based strategy that commits the resources of the federal government to the enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population.

Fence Secure the Border

Ensure that an interlocking surveillance camera system is installed along the border and that fence construction is completed by July 1, 2010.

Ensure Document Security and end exemptions for Mexicans and Canadians to the US-VISIT program, which tracks the arrival and departure of foreign visitors. Since these countries account for the vast majority of foreigners coming here (85 percent), such a policy clearly violates Congress' intent in mandating this check-in/check-out system.

Reject Mexico's "matricula consular" card, which functions as an illegal-immigrant identification card.

Modernize Bring the application process out of the past century and into the 21st century.

Modernize the Process of Legal Immigration

Eliminate the visa lottery system and the admission category for adult brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens.

Increase visas for highly-skilled and highly-educated applicants.

Expedite processing for those who serve honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Improve our immigration process so that those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American dream.

Governor Huckabee has always been grateful to live in a country that people are trying to break into, rather than break out of.

Fair. Illegal immigrates will return to their country.

And get in line to come into the US of A. And be welcomed when they come.

My grandparents were born in Poland and came to live and die in America. Pictured at left is my mom at the grave side of her parents buried the soil of their adopted country. Her grandchildren, the Penta-Posse, call her "Babcia" after the Polish tradition.

It means 'grandmother.' We are so lucky her parents made their way into America.

The Huckabee plan is clear: Prevent Amnesty

Policies that promote or tolerate amnesty will be rejected.

Propose to provide all illegal immigrants a 120-day window to register with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and leave the country.

Those who register and return to their home country will face no penalty if they later apply to immigrate or visit; those who do not return home will be, when caught, barred from future reentry for a period of 10 years.

This is not what is called a "touchback" provision. Here's why: Those who leave this country and apply to return from their home country would await their turn in the line.
