It's now becoming clear that Barack Obama is willing to put everything on the table in order to be the president who passes health-care reform.

Everything, that is, except a ban on federal funding for abortion.

Abortion-Funding-Chart-AUL.jpg

Abortion tax payer funding
flow chart by Americans United for Life

Last September, the president promised that "no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place." Yet the legislation most likely to move forward in Congress would be the single greatest expansion of abortion since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

The White House knows how to turn Mr. Obama's September commitment into legislative action. I met with senior White House officials and told them that only adding a so-called Hyde Amendment to the health-care reform bills would fulfill the president's promise to protect Americans from subsidizing abortion.

The Hyde Amendment dates back to the 1970s, when congressional leaders discovered that Medicaid was paying for nearly 300,000 abortions a year. This had not been an intended outcome of the Medicaid program, which was created in 1965 with strong bipartisan support. So in 1976 Rep. Henry Hyde introduced an amendment to the Health and Human Services appropriations bill prohibiting taxpayer funds from paying for abortions.

Article here and at the jump. Be sure to read the comments at The WSJ.

"Help stop the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade..."
Listen to the recording of the URGENT nationwide webcast to prevent Washington D.C. bureaucrats and abortion industry lobbyists from using GOVERNMENT FUNDS to pay for abortions and bailout the failing abortion industry!

Despite the fact that most Americans do NOT want our government to pay for abortion with their money, the Senate caved in to pressure from Planned Parenthood and abortion industry lobbyists.

The Senate health care bill -- if passed into law -- will result in a MASSIVE government-funded bailout of the abortion industry -- and the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade!

To respond swiftly to this crisis, the 70+ pro-life and pro-family organizations that make up the Stop the Abortion Mandate Coalition joined together on Tuesday, December 15, for a huge nationwide webcast, featuring a panel of expert presenters:
Webcast presenters: Tony Perkins, Wendy Wright, Kristan Hawkins, David Bereit, Charmaine Yoest, Marjorie Dannenfelser, and Douglas Johnson

Dispel the Myth

The Stupak-Pitts Amendment (see the actual language here) which passed in U.S. House of Representatives verison of health care reform ensures that government money will not be used to fund abortions. The Stupak Amendment clearly maintains the current status quo keeping in line with the already in-place Hyde Amendment. However, some are falsely saying that that the Stupak Amendment goes beyond Hyde. Check out our chart below which compares Stupak to Hyde and read this op-ed by the Con. Bart Stupak on what exactly his amendment does.

When you tangle with print, radio, or visual media your name and identifiers are sometimes going to be mangled. It is not always deliberate. Donald Rumsfeld, our former Secretary of Defense, says to never confuse a conspiracy with incompetence.

The wife of Your Business Blogger(R), Charmaine, appeared on Joe Scarborough's show a while back. She prepped using the 10 Tips for Your Big Show Biz Break. She was debating some of our some liberal friends over a New York Times article.

It said that cheating on a spouse can be good.

Your Business Blogger(R) advises against cheating on a spouse. Bad for the job. And business is a jealous mistress.

Who?

Anyway, Charmaine does her homework. And provides name, rank and serial number to the producer. Including her Ph.D. suffix. Those three letters cost me a million dollars and ten years. I insist on the lettering. She doesn't care -- I do.

Debating NARAL on Abortion in ObamaCare
And What's in a Name?

November 10, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine_Yoest_aul_pub_shot_2009.jpg

Charmaine Yoest will be debating Nancy Keenan, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America (formerly the National Abortion Rights Action League).

They will discuss the pro-life, anti-abortion amendment language and the future of the House Bill as it moves to the Senate.

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

It's gonna be good.

Charmaine's AUL Action will not support any bill with out abortion funding restrictions.

Keenan's NARAL will not support any bill with abortion funding restrictions.

They will appear on Dr. Nancy on MSNBC. Hit time is 12 noon EST.

As one would expect from the liberal MSNBC, the host will not be unbiased. See MSNBC's 'Doctor Nancy' Admits She Finds Pro-Life Democrats 'Infuriating'

So the odds will be 2 on 1. Which is unusual. Charmaine usually faces 3 on 1.

And wins.

Tune in and let us know what you think.

NARAL changed its name because no one could stomach ABORTION in their org title. Much like KFC used to be Kentucky FRIED Chicken. ABORTION and FRIED are hard to swallow. Media Alert: Charmaine in The Wall Street Journal
on Tax Dollars Shouldn't Fund Abortion

October 15, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine_Yoest_aul_pub_shot_2009.jpgCharmaine has an article up this morning on your tax dollars going to pay for abortions. Only 13 percent of the American public approves of tax-payer funding of abortion.

* OPINION
* OCTOBER 14, 2009, 6:57 P.M. ET

Tax Dollars Shouldn't Fund Abortion
Every Democratic health bill so far on offer would change 30 years of federal practice.

By CHARMAINE YOEST [Ph.D.]

The debate over health-care reform is now entering a new phase. This week, the Senate Finance Committee voted for Sen. Max Baucus's health-care bill, which sets up a possible Senate vote on the legislation later this month. Aggressive negotiations are underway on how to handle abortion funding.

Democratic leaders claim that all they want is to maintain the "status quo" on abortion. In reality, maintaining what we have now isn't even on the table. To do that, a health-care bill would have to explicitly prevent federal dollars from being used for elective abortions. Provisions that would have done that were killed by all five committees that have handled health-care reform bills this year. Instead, the abortion compromise in the works is a provision modeled on an amendment Rep. Lois Capps (D., Calif.) added to the House bill.

The Capps Amendment is a radical departure from the status quo. As it stands now, the federal government does not pay into health-care plans that cover elective abortions. What's more, no government health plans cover elective abortion, period. That includes Medicaid, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, and other programs.

Continued at the jump. Be sure to read the comments on the original article on WSJ.com.

The Time Traveler's Wife & Jeremiah & Longfellow

September 4, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine_Yoest_aul_pub_shot_2009.jpgAmong pro-lifers the words of the ancient prophet Jeremiah have special meaning: 'I knew you before I formed you in the womb."

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

This tells us that our lives have a transcendent meaning, and sets a frame for all of our work on life. Those words rang in my memory after Jack and I recently went to see the hit summer movie, The Time Traveler's Wife.

And while I certainly don't endorse all of the movie's values, I was drawn in by seeing a Hollywood movie where the title character is a wife.

(I should warn you though that my son, John, thought it was 'the worst movie ever," not enough explosions and car chases, I guess.)

Still, I thought the movie made a powerful pro-life statement. . . albeit entirely unintentional, I'm sure.

I'll confess that I have always loved stories about time travel. I know I'm not the only one because it shows up so often as a plot device. Our fascination with breaking the confines of time reminds me of C.S. Lewis' observation about the nature of man; he argues that there must be such a thing as "justice" because we feel so keenly outraged by "injustice":

A man feels wet when he falls into water,
because man is not a water animal:
a fish would not feel wet.
-C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

We feel wet in water . . . and we feel uncomfortable with the passage of time ("Look how you've grown!") because we are eternal beings experiencing a temporal life.

I believe that's why we are drawn to stories about time travel. . . and particularly those about a love that transcends time. Because it speaks to the deeper reality of eternity that we recognize with some part of our souls. "I knew you. . . "

The Time Traveler's Wife is billed as a love story, and it is. But in many ways, the love story at the heart of the tale is the bond between the couple and their daughter. The scene that stays with me is one where the wife, Clare, pregnant with their daughter, is taking a bath.

Her husband Henry suddenly returns from time-traveling where he has just been with their daughter, ten years in the future. Clare has suffered several miscarriages, so she worries about carrying the baby to term. . . Having now met their daughter, Henry can reassure her.

'She's beautiful, Clare,' he tells her.

Surprised, Clare looks with wonder toward her very advanced pregnancy and says, "You've met her?"

They laugh together with joy, with the knowledge that the very same unborn baby with them that day lives in the future as the vibrant ten-year-old that Henry has just met. They knew their daughter, even before they'd met her in real time.

It's fanciful. But it also reflects a truth about the unique, timeless, value of each life.

My father used to tell me that before my birth I was "a twinkle in my mother's eye."
the_diva_dancer_baby-boo_2009_aul.jpg

Similarly, our son James, the youngest of our five children, sometimes asks where he was when he sees the pictures of our family before he was born. We tell him he was an angel in heaven watching and waiting his turn to join the family and increase the fun. The notion reassures him that he has always been a part of our family, unbounded by time and space.

This weekend we'll be packing up the kids in the Suburban and heading south to North Carolina to visit Jack's mom.

Helena, Sarah and James Yoest

I imagine many of you will be doing something similar.

As we turn our attention to family and friends this weekend, I wanted to take a minute just to thank you for standing with us and enabling us to defend life together.

First thing Tuesday we'll be back in the fray as Congress returns and health care reform is at the top of the agenda. The President will be giving a major address on health care on Wednesday and the following week we'll be meeting with his Domestic Policy Advisor at the White House to talk about the abortion mandate in health care. So we will be ready to run hard again next week and the AUL legal team will have new material for you on Tuesday. We'll be back quickly to our usual policy focus.

But in the meantime, as we slow down for the Labor Day holiday, it's worth taking a few minutes together to reflect on why we persevere in this fight. Even Hollywood tells the truth when they want to tell a good story. As Longfellow penned in his Psalm of Life:

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Life is real. And it's worth defending.

Thank you for joining me in working to protect and defend life!

Yours For Life,

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

Sotomayor Fundamental Right to Abortion;
Charmaine Yoest in Human Events

Charmaine's Testimony
to the Judiciary Committee
Charmaine has an article in Human Events,

Sotomayor: Fundamental Right To Abortion, Not to Bear Arms, by Charmaine Yoest, 07/28/2009

Of all the generalities and evasions that Judge Sonia Sotomayor offered the Senate Judiciary Committee during her confirmation hearing, surely the strangest was one she made when describing her role in the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Sotomayor was on the PRLDEF's board of directors for twelve years during the 1980s and early 1990s, a period when the fund issued no less than six briefs to the Supreme Court in abortion cases. Those briefs argued, among other things, that abortion was a "fundamental right" and that, contrary to scientific evidence, "the belief that life begins at conception is religious." In them, the PRLDEF called upon the high court to strike down every common-sense state law regulating abortion, including ones supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans -- such as parental-notification and informed-consent laws....

Dr. Yoest was the principal pro-life leader asked to testify at the Sotomayor hearings. For more, see www.sotomayor411.com.

Panel to vote on Sotomayor, confirmation likely,

The anti-abortion rights group Americans United for Life has also weighed in against Sotomayor, writing to senators urging a "no" vote and announcing that it, too, would include her confirmation vote in its annual scorecard.

The group said it was concerned Sotomayor would "undermine any efforts by our elected representatives to pass even the most widely accepted regulations on abortion and circumvent the will of the people."

Abortion unleashed in Obama healthcare; The current health care bill will expand abortion more than anything since the Roe v. Wade decision by the Supreme Court. It will offer no freedom and little choice,

After the last election, the media wanted to write an obituary about the pro-life movement," said Dr. Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life, "but on Capitol Hill they're getting a lot of questions about FOCA, and this event is being taken very seriously. This battle over health care may seem new in some ways, but it's the latest fight over FOCA, dressed up differently."

Abortion a hurdle in health plan, Opponents gear up to fight 'any mandate' to require procedure, by Sylvia A Smith, Washington editor

WASHINGTON - Any health insurance bill Washington comes up with must ban coverage of abortion, one of the most common surgical procedures in the U.S., a group of organizations that oppose abortion has told Congress and President Obama.

The groups said they will ratchet up a campaign to ensure the "abortion mandate" is stripped from the bill.

"Abortion is not health care and does not belong in health-care reform," the president of Americans United for Life said in a letter to President Obama on Thursday.

Charmaine Yoest said her organization will oppose any bill that "fails to explicitly exclude both abortion funding and mandatory abortion coverage" and that doesn't allow health care providers to refuse to perform abortions.

Charmaine Quoted In USA TODAY, Politico
& The Washington Post

July 24, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

USA TODAY interviews Charmaine in Abortion fight is 'enduring divide,' by Joan Biskupic,

"Judge Sotomayor represents the future of the Supreme Court," says Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, which would like to win reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal nationwide. Yoest testified against Sotomayor, who would be President Obama's first appointment and the first Hispanic justice.

As a lower court judge, Sotomayor never ruled on abortion rights and, like nominees before her, she declined to tell senators her position on the issue.

Yoest said activists against abortion are mobilizing tens of thousands of people to urge members of Congress to ensure that any new health care law excludes the abortion procedure, so insurance companies would not be required to pay for it and no government funds would go toward it. (Law dating to the 1970s prohibits the use of federal Medicaid funds for abortion except in cases of rape, incest or when the woman's life is endangered.)

William Wan writes Abortion Foes Rally Online Against Health Care Reform in The Washington Post,

Abortion foes -- including some leaders among religious conservatives -- put on a massive webcast last night aimed at rallying anti-abortion forces against current health care reform bills in Congress...

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, equates the health care plan to "a stealth agenda to impose FOCA [the Freedom of Choice Act favoring abortion rights]."

Kim Gandy from NOW Stepping Down
See the Charmaine and Kim Smackdown

June 15, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

LifeNews reports that Kim Gandy is leaving the leadership of the National Organization for Women (NOW) to spend more time with her family. Maybe...

It is more likely that she will join the liberal feminists running the Obama administration.

gandy_yoest_six_panel_smack_down.JPG Charmaine has crossed paths with NOW's Gandy a time or two. The most memorable was in November 2005. At the time Your Business Blogger(R) noted the altercation,

I was in the middle of drafting an article on the glass ceiling for women. And got a first person account instead.

Click on image to enlarge; Charmaine on Right in red.

Today I thought I'd give the little woman a respite from the laundry and the kids. "Go play in the Nation's Capital," I said to Charmaine this morning. "Have a fun lunch with the girls!"

Then on the radio I hear Rush talk about a smack down at the Supreme Court and see a photo of Charmaine in her red power suit at Rush Limbaugh EIB Extra... .

She had Kim Gandy in a half-nelson. Elbowing Gandy aside at a press conference.

I have sat through a number of cantankerous board meetings. Adversarial budget negotiations. Hardball sales presentations. Terminations. Giving and getting.

But no one actually got spanked.

I thought the gathering of girls today would be a powder puff tea party of cooperation. Sweetness and light and reason and 'Please' and 'Thankyou.'

I was wrong. No one fights like a woman on a mission.

I'll have to rewrite the glass ceiling article.

(It is a joy to marry over your head.)

Rights of Conscience for Pro-Life Supporters

| By Jack Yoest

Americans United for Life is a public interest law firm that works to protect life in law.

AUL also works to protect the freedom of conscience of health care providers.

And the freedom of conscience of school-age children.

Alert Readers will recall the trauma inflicted on The Diva caused by our union-backed local elementary school. Watch her tell her story of harassment in her own words:

Student harassed for Pro-Life T-Shirt
See AUL's overview and philosophy of Rights of Conscience,
Healthcare Rights of Conscience Overview

"Legal protection for healthcare freedom of conscience affirms the need to provide quality care to patients, but also acknowledges that certain demands of patients, usually for procedures that are life-destructive and not life-saving, must not be blindly accommodated to the detriment of the rights of healthcare providers. Individuals and institutions do not lose their right to exercise their moral and religious beliefs and consciences once they decide to enter the healthcare profession.

Those who oppose laws protecting freedom of conscience, primarily pro-abortion advocates and groups, increasingly couch their arguments with references to women's right to healthcare access (including access to contraception) and seek to compel providers to act in violation of their consciences. However, the use of the term "access" is a red herring, as there is no real problem, when a conscientious objection is made, with a patient going to another (willing) healthcare provider for service."

It is not certain that the Sotomayor "empathy" would extend to The Diva.

The Washington Times Gets It Right:
Sotomayor's Abortion Ties

June 10, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

The Editorial page writer at The Washington Times has done some valuable research that will advance the debate on Sotomayor. The nominee is not Pro-Life.

EDITORIAL: Sotomayor's abortion ties, Don't believe disinformation that she's pro-life

The most basic evidence of the judge's support for Roe comes in the triple combination of White House assurances to that effect, of pro-choice senators declaring after meeting with her that they are sure she agrees with them, and of her entire jurisprudential approach of broadly construing anything characterized as "women's rights."

Other evidence is more direct. Consider that from 1980 until October 1992, Judge Sotomayor served on the board -- at times as vice president and at times as chairman of the litigation committee -- of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. The New York Times in 1992 described her as "a top policy maker on the board." During that time period, the fund filed briefs in not one, not two, but at least six prominent court cases in strong support of "abortion rights."

Sotomayor: Who Sleeps Better at Night,
AUL or NARAL?
Charmaine Interviewed in USA Today
And by AP

June 5, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Alert Readers following on Twitter know that Charmaine has been in a number of media interviews.

Sometimes as a source.

Sometimes as a target.

See her quote in USA Today this morning on the Sotomayor nomination,

Sotomayor, a trial judge for six years and appellate judge for 11, has not ruled on a case involving Roe v. Wade. She has decided a few cases at the fringes of the issue, yet those defy predictions.

On Wednesday, Feinstein explained why she will persist on the abortion rights question: "I remember what it was like when abortion was illegal, and the lives of young desperate women were in jeopardy." She said she worries that "Americans no longer appreciate what it would mean if (abortion rights) were taken away."

Nominees usually elude such questions during their hearings.

"I don't have concerns about this nominee in the sense that I think there is something on the record (against abortion rights)," says Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights. "We just think it's important for Supreme Court nominees to say where they stand."

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, agrees. While observing that she and Northup both see nothing definitive in Sotomayor's record, Yoest says, "I think Nancy's probably sleeping a little better at night."

JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS at AP interviewed Charmaine for GOP leader doesn't rule out Sotomayor filibuster

Abortion-rights opponents circulated a 1988 legal brief joined by the PRLDEF that took a position in strong support of abortion rights and argued strenuously against dismantling the underpinnings of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that established a woman's right to end her pregnancy.

The brief, submitted to the Supreme Court to support a challenge to a Missouri law making it illegal to use public officials or facilities for abortions, warns of "the danger of tampering with the core framework of Roe v. Wade." The brief said doing so would disproportionately harm poor women of color. The high court ultimately upheld the Missouri law in the case, Webster v. Reproductive Health Services.

There is no evidence or indication that Sotomayor had any role in drafting the brief, or the PRLDEF's decision to join it. Cesar A. Perales, now the group's president, said its board has never been involved in deciding which cases the organization takes on or matters of litigation. Board members sometimes do, however, help decide which legal issues the organization should focus on, Perales said.

But abortion-rights opponents said the brief raises questions about Sotomayor's stance on Roe.

"It's explicitly a pro-abortion argument," said Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life. "That specific case makes it very difficult for her to say that she doesn't have a position" on abortion rights.

Other citations on Sotomayor,

CitizenLink reports,

In a recent poll commissioned by Americans United for Life, 69 percent of respondents said they do not want a Supreme Court justice who opposes "making it illegal for someone to take a girl younger than the age of 18 across state lines to obtain abortions without her parents' knowledge."

The Catholic Review
writes
Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, a public-interest law and policy organization, said in a statement that "for all the president's talk of finding 'common ground,' this appointment completely contradicts that hollow promise." Without explaining why, Yoest said Sotomayor's "judicial philosophy undermines common ground" and called her "a radical pick that divides America."

Pro-life leaders, groups condemn murder of Kansas abortion doctor, By Chaz Muth at the Catholic News Service reports,

WASHINGTON - Pro-life advocates universally condemned the May 31 murder of a Kansas abortion doctor, with officials from several U.S. right-to-life groups saying such extreme acts only hurt the pro-life cause.

"We condemn this lawless act of violence," said Charmaine Yoest, president of the Americans United for Life. "The foundational right to life that our work is dedicated to extends to everyone. Whoever is responsible for this reprehensible violence must be brought to justice under the law."

Dr. George Tiller, 67, of Wichita, Kan., was fatally shot while serving as an usher at the city's Formation Lutheran Church during morning services, according to The Associated Press

Let's start with a reality check. Randall Terry does not speak for the broader pro-life movement. It's important to note that just because Randall Terry from Operation Rescue speaks out forcefully againt abortion doctor George Tiller that does not mean his sentiment is shared among mainstream pro-life groups.

You don't need to believe me. Just compare Operation Rescue's website with Concerned Women for America or Americans United for Life and on and on. The sanctity of life message is the underlying theme but the tactics and language are different. Much different.

Media: Tiller a Martyr, Abortion Not Killing and Pro-Lifers are Crazy

Tiller as Abortion Rights Martyr

Broadcast networks painted Tiller as a man willing to die in defense of women's rights.

All of the broadcast coverage noted past attempts people have made to disrupt Tiller's work - a bombing of his clinic in the 1980s and a 1993 attack in which he was shot in both arms - which, while pertinent to the story, also increased the aura of martyrdom that now surrounds him.
...
Statements from major pro-life organizations revealed a different story: that the pro-life community truly views all loss of human life as a tragedy.

Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, said "The foundational right to life that our work is dedicated to extends to everyone."

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, described Sotomayor as a "radical pick." But Yoest acknowledged that Sotomayor's most notable ruling on abortion was on the conservative side. In the ruling, she said the Bush administration had the right to prohibit abortions by overseas organizations receiving U.S. funding, as well as the right to prohibit the groups from speaking out against the restrictions.

Yoest said Sotomayor was following the court's precedents, something she might not do if she were on the Supreme Court. "There is no doubt that Judge Sotomayor's philosophy is that she is not only a practitioner of activism, but a defender of it," she said.
...
On the other side of the debate, Northup's concern is just the opposite. "That decision certainly doesn't suggest she's a judicial activist," [Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights] said, adding that her organization knows of no instance in which Sotomayor has talked about Roe or expressed support for abortion rights. "We don't want any Souters, either," she said. The reference was to retiring Justice David H. Souter, whose jurisprudence surprised his advocates once he joined the court...

"What we know about her we like, but I don't know the answer on abortion rights," Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, said in an interview.

Abortion opponents say they are convinced Sotomayor is an "extreme" supporter of abortion, although several acknowledge they do not have specific evidence of her views.

"She is a radical pick that divides America," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

WND CHANGING OF THE GUARD, Limbaugh: Obama's judicial pick a 'racist' Criticizes comment that Hispanic woman can make better decisions than white male, Posted: May 26, 2009, By Bob Unruh, © 2009 WorldNetDaily,

Charmaine Yoest, chief of Americans United for Life, said the nomination torches any statements by Obama he wants "common ground" over the abortion war.

"A vote to confirm Judge Sotomayor as the next Supreme Court Justice is a vote to strip Americans of the ability to choose for themselves how to regulate abortion. Our recent polling data speaks to this point of judicial activism and as a woman, I don't believe she 'represents' American women," she said.

"The Supreme Court took on the role of the 'National Abortion Control Board' in 1973 with Roe vs. Wade, and Judge Sotomayor will further entrench the court's self-appointed role as the sole arbiter of abortion policy. Based on her judicial philosophy, she will work to elevate unrestricted, unregulated, and taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand to a fundamental constitutional right by reading the sweeping Freedom of Choice Act - also known as FOCA - into the Constitution," she continued.

Fearful of Latino Losses, GOP Cautious with Sotomayor
By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff,

That emotion was clear in the reactions of conservative interest groups to the nomination.

"This appointment would provide a pedestal for an avowed judicial activist to impose her personal policy and beliefs onto others from the bench at a time when the courts are at a crossroad and critical abortion regulations -- supported by the vast majority of Americans -- like partial-birth abortion and informed consent laws lie in the balance," said Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, a group that opposes abortion. Other conservative groups called Sotomayor a radical judicial activist -- words that in battles past have been used to rally core supporters, yet neutral toward Hispanics, just like the strategists recommend.

Sotomayor and Judges Making "Policy"
Posted on: May 28, 2009 9:09 AM, by Ed Brayton

The point is that the line between interpreting the law and making policy is not nearly as clear as conservatives want people to think. Indeed, here is a textbook example of what conservatives really mean when they say a judge should not "set policy" from Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life, speaking about Sotomayor:

"She believes the role of the court is to set policy which is exactly the philosophy that led to the Supreme Court turning into the National Abortion Control Board denying the American people to right to be heard on this critical issue," Yoest said. "This appointment would provide a pedestal for an avowed judicial activist to impose her personal policy and beliefs onto others from the bench at a time when the courts are at a crossroad and critical abortion regulations - supported by the vast majority of Americans - like partial-birth abortion and informed consent laws lie in the balance."

They think that Roe v Wade was an example of "making policy" but that simply isn't true. Whether you agree with it or not, Roe v Wade was a decision based on the constitutionality of laws forbidding abortion. So very much like "judicial activism" and its various cognates, when conservatives talk about judges "making policy" or "legislating from the bench" all they really mean is "judges ruling in ways we don't like."

Steve Benen writing the Political Animal column at The Washington Monthly, May 28, 2009

SHE'S PRO-CHOICE, RIGHT?.... ,

Shortly after Sotomayor was introduced as the nominee, Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, quickly blasted her as "a radical pick" who "believes the role of the court is to set policy which is exactly the philosophy that led to the Supreme Court turning into the National Abortion Control Board."

What was that based on? Apparently nothing. The right assumes she's pro-choice; the left assumes she's pro-choice. But no one seems to know whether she's pro-choice or not.

A number of notable conservatives, meanwhile, have taken a different view of the nomination. Dahlia Lithwick at Slate writes Republicans won't beat Sonia Sotomayor,

The Plum LineGreg Sargent's blog writes, Steele: I Really Don't Know Whether Sotomayor Is An "Activist" Judge,

Steele's fellow Republicans and conservatives, however, say those Sotomayor comments prove she is an activist judge. Senator Orrin Hatch told MSNBC yesterday that Sotomayor's 2005 claim "means you're going to get an activist justice on the Supreme Court." Americans United for Life denounced her as an "avowed judicial activist."

Steele doesn't agree. Yet.

David Brody, CBN News White House Correspondent, reports at CBN News, Conservatives Down on 'Policy Maker' Sotomayor

"This is a judge who has gone on the record in defense of the idea of judicial activism so it's pretty certain that she's going to approach the bench with an intention of imposing her own personal political preferences into the process," said Charmaine Yoest with Americans United for Life.

Supreme Litmus Test: The Constitution;
Americans Don't Want Activists as Justices

May 21, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

constitution_we_the_people.gifAmericans United for Life commissioned a scientific poll -- outrageously expensive -- to learn what the public wants in a Justice sitting on the Supreme Court.

It would appear that the public would not want any nominee Obama might uncover. Alert Readers will recall that Obama said that the Constitution,

"reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day...

The original Constitution as well as the Civil War Amendments...But I think it is an imperfect document, and I think it is a document that reflects some deep flaws in American culture, the Colonial culture nascent at that time."

Nothing is perfect on this side of eternity. If the Constitution is to be 'made perfect' or 'de-flawed' the founding framers put an amendment process in place to ratify any changes -- the states do this -- not the Justices. Not the Executive Branch embodied in Obama, but the legislators.

Americans do not want Justices legislating. Goodness, we don't even want Congress legislating...

Americans want fidelity to the Constitution.

Charmaine's letter to the Senators follows with the top line data.

***

May 21, 2009

Dear Senators:

As we await President Obama's announcement of his choice to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice David Souter's retirement, new polling data reveal that Americans want Justices who disavow politics and who will uphold the Constitution and the rule of law as written, including on issues involving abortion.

By overwhelming majorities, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents agreed that judges should exercise restraint and check their own beliefs and predispositions at the courthouse door. They agreed on upholding common sense abortion regulations already in place in the states, including parental consent laws, and objecting to late-term abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions in the U.S. and overseas. Further, this consensus was held even among Americans who self-described themselves as "pro-choice."

For example, on the role of federal judges, majorities of self-identified Republicans, Independents, and Democrats:

* Agreed that "When considering a new Justice for the United States Supreme Court, I would prefer that my United States Senators look for a man or woman who will interpret the law as it is written and not take into account his or her personal viewpoints and experiences."

(Agreement: 92% of Republicans, 86% of Independents, 84% of Democrats, 91% of conservatives, 85% of moderates, 80% of liberals)

These same majorities were in vast agreement on abortion regulations as they:

* Opposed a nominee who "Supports late-term abortions, which are abortions in the 7th, 8th, or 9th months of pregnancy, and are also known as 'Partial-Birth Abortions.'"

(Opposition: 89% of Republicans, 78% of Independents, 77% of Democrats, 89% of conservatives, 80% of moderates, and 67% of liberals)

* Opposed a nominee who "Opposes making it illegal for someone to take a girl younger than the age of 18 across state lines to obtain abortions without her parents' knowledge."

(73% of Republicans, 74% of Independents, 62% of Democrats, 73% of conservatives, 67% of moderates, 59% of liberals)

* Opposed a nominee who "Favors using tax dollars to pay for abortions here in the United States."

(Opposition: 86% of Republicans, 67% of Independents, 61% of Democrats, 86% of conservatives, 62% of moderates, 54% of liberals)

* Opposed a nominee who "Favors using tax dollars to pay for abortions in other countries."

(Opposition: 97% of Republicans, 86% of Independents, 84% of Democrats, 95% of conservatives, 87% of moderates, 76% of liberals)

* Opposed a nominee who "believes that the Courts, and not the voters or elected officials, should make policies on abortion in the United States."

(78% of Republicans, 65% of Independents, 69% of Democrats, 75% of conservatives, 71% of moderates, 65% of liberals)

Significantly, the majority of Americans of all political and ideological cohorts expressed opposition to a suggested federal law that abolishes restrictions on abortions (including 93% of Republicans, 69% of Independents, and 72% of Democrats, 88% of conservatives, 77% of moderates, and 62% of liberals.)

This unnamed law is the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), a law that our next Justice could rule upon in an upcoming term of the U.S. Supreme Court. Fully nine-in-ten Americans who identified with a pro-life position on the six-point scale (90%) and 65% who selected a pro-choice stance on the same spectrum were dissatisfied with this potential legislation.

Finally, when asked whether the next Justice should be a man or a woman, the tri-partisan consensus also volunteered that it does not matter (79% of Republicans, 78% of Independents, 61% of Democrats, 78% of conservatives, 67% of moderates, and 62% of liberals -- as well as 66% of women.)

Senators, we urge you to take these clear findings into consideration before you vote on the President's nominee and recognize that the majority of your constituents -- regardless of political party -- fervently oppose any type of judicial activism that would rescind common sense laws on abortion and its regulations.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charmaine Yoest

Memo to Senate Members: What do Americans Want in the Next Supreme Court Justice?
New Polling Data Reveal Answers

WHAT

Tele-News Conference to share a memo from Americans United for Life (AUL) urging all members of the Senate to consider fresh polling data on what Americans want in the next Supreme Court Justice. The data show that while the U.S. is supposedly a "divided" nation on the issue of abortion, overwhelming majorities of Americans agree on numerous issues relevant to the selection of a Supreme Court Justice, including:

· The role of interpreting the law vs. judicial activism based on personal viewpoints and opinion

· The role of states in regulating abortion

· Agreement/disagreement with positions held by potential nominees on

o Late term abortion

o Tax dollars paying for abortion

o Parental notification/consent before abortion

· Demographic preferences such as desired gender of the next Justice

The data also detail the political party, past voting record and demographic make-up of those polled. Q&A will follow a brief discussion of the poll findings.

Abortion Debate Intensifies, Awaits Nominee
, Tuesday, By Amy Harder, May 19, 2009

Abortion has re-emerged as a hot issue, and if history is any indication, it will get even hotter when President Obama makes his Supreme Court nomination.

Obama -- who first spoke out for a nominee with "empathy" before a Planned Parenthood audience in 2007 -- rekindled conservatives' wariness over the weekend with his speech at the University of Notre Dame, calling for "fair-minded" dialogue and "common ground."

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, found Obama's speech at Notre Dame troubling in light of the names at the top of his short list. "He continues to want to use rhetoric to describe a mythical common ground while at the same time pursuing a real radical actual agenda," Yoest said. Her group recently released a report criticizing possible nominees such as Solicitor General Elena Kagan, appellate judges Sonia Sotomayor and Diane Wood, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and outgoing Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears.

Obama's Short List of Abortion Supporters, by Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] 05/18/2009

Americans are used to hearing nominees for the Supreme Court carefully hedge their answers to any question related to Roe v. Wade and abortion. This reflects a political reality in which any hint of sympathy toward defending unborn life in the law spells confirmation challenges for a potential nominee.

In contrast, this political reality does not exist for those committed to an abortion-rights ideology. A study Americans United for Life released this week examining the life-related views of President Obama's rumored "short-list" for the Supreme Court documents demonstrated on-the-record evidence of the potential nominees' pro-abortion opinions expressed consistently and without hesitation.

Media Alert: Charmaine Quoted In LA Times
51% identify as 'pro-life' in U.S.
Why The Change?

May 16, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

The household of Your Business Blogger(R) has been involved in a number of studies -- commissioning statistical polling.

A number of years ago, Charmaine's dissertation centered on data gathered with a $230,000 budget. To pass academic peer-reviewed scrutiny, she was most careful in 'framing questions' to get unbiased responses. And she had an expert team study the study so that all the actors involved in the questioning understood the questions.

The Little Woman knows statistical sampling and polling pit-falls.

It was of great interest to learn about the new Gallup poll showing a move of America from Pro-Choice to Pro-Life. Reporters began calling.

Charmaine did an outstanding interview with the LA Times reporter, Robin Abcarian, who was engaging and fair. (I know this 'cause I was driving while they talked on the phone...) The interview follows later.

I wanted to know more on the cause of the dramatic shift to America's current Pro-Life self-identification. So I asked Charmaine, Why such a big change?

This passes for pillow talk in our house...

She says that America has always been Pro-Life and there are four reasons for the poll shift:

Reframing Pro-Choice,
Obama Backlash,
Advances in Technology,
Financial Independence

Reframing Pro-Choice

How polling questions are framed can prompt a particular answer. But this was not the challenge of Gallup: They have asked the same question for years. The issue may well be the question itself. It seems that the public is beginning to understand when an abortion occurs -- in which trimester -- is important to being Are you Pro-Life or Pro-Choice in this black and white question. No shade of gray.

So. If a Pro-Choicer recoils at partial birth abortion, as do all normal humans, can she still be Pro-Choice? The question (and Cecile Richards at Planned Parenthood) does not allow this.

Or, more likely, if the Pro-Choicer is confused about any abortion after viability, is she no longer Pro-Choice? Maybe. If I am not Pro-Choice, then I am Pro-Life.

Charmaine's work reminds us that most Americans have always been Pro-life. But only now have the extremists of the Pro-Choicer agenda -- of abortion on demand -- pushed the public out of the comfortable gray area -- the mushy middle -- into a stark admission: I am not a part of any group who holds for partial birth abortion.

The public perception -- the shifting of the frame of the question -- changed.

It was: Yes, I am Pro-Choice because a woman can abort her baby in the first trimester.

It is: No, I am not Pro-Choice because there is no reason to abort in the third trimester.

The shift was not in the framing of the question but in the understanding of when the abortion was taking place during the pregnancy.

This demonstrates that the incremental strategy of changing law state-by-state in universal, common-sense regulation is what all Americans want. The incremental strategy of Americans United for Life is working.

Obama Backlash

This is why Planned Parenthood was so insistent that Candidate Obama push and pass The Freedom of Choice Act or FOCA. This law would kill all incremental controls passed by local lawmakers on abortion. The public is not happy with the extremism of the current Executive Order allowing Federal funding for abortions overseas. Americans don't want to pay for abortions in any country.

Americans do not want to pay for any abortion bailout.

President Obama has installed radical pro-abortion political appointees to implement Planned Parenthood's abortion on demand agenda -- abortion at any place; at any time; for any reason; at taxpayer expense. People don't like this. This makes self-identification as Pro-Choice unpalatable.

The Obama Backlash began when Jill Stanek documented his position against Infants Born Alive. What politician dare be against legislation protecting infants born alive?

Advances in Technology

Four Dimension Sonogram
-- where the mother can watch her baby move about in real time. 85% of women who see the sonogram do not go through with a planned abortion -- which is why Planned Parenthood doesn't care for the science of the sonogram: It kills profits.

Babies can now survive at very young stages. Years ago Your Business Blogger(R) worked with aggressive technologies to help neonates with underdeveloped lungs to 'breathe' and to live. The public understands the new survival rates and is beginning to understand the illogical of aborting a child who could, today, survive outside the womb, where, a few years ago, could not.

Financial Independence

Most legal scholars -- even Obama short-listers -- agree that Roe v Wade was poorly reasoned and poorly decided. Even back then, the Justices cited a compelling state interest against third trimester abortions.

But recent Supreme Court cases have shifted from the healthy viability of the baby to the financial viability of the mother, a "reliance interest." The Court has now ruled that abortion is necessary so that women can break the glass ceiling.

And this is why liberals are so unhappy with Sarah Palin: She could have lotsa babies and still be a governor. Palin proves that financial success is compatible with motherhood (X 5).

(No, it is not easy. Do not just drop by our house unless you want to help do laundry...)

51% identify as 'pro-life' in U.S. It's the first time the Gallup Poll finds 'pro-choice' outweighed -- at 42% -- and a near-reversal of last year's figures,
By Robin Abcarian,May 16, 2009

At a time when President Obama is trying to convince opponents in the abortion battle that they can find middle ground -- in rhetoric, if not reality -- a new Gallup Poll shows that more Americans describe themselves as "pro-life" than "pro-choice."

For the first time since it began asking the question in 1995, Gallup reported Friday, a majority of adults questioned for its annual survey on values and beliefs -- 51% -- said that when it comes to abortion, they consider themselves "pro-life"; 42% consider themselves "pro-choice." (The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.)

...antiabortion activists think they have more than the new poll on their side. "This isn't new," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life. "It tracks pretty much with what we've always known: People generally are pro-life depending on how you ask the question."

But Yoest said abortion foes were not placated. "There has been such an avalanche of pro-abortion activity that it's jaw-dropping. It's not just that his rhetoric doesn't square with reality; the gap is Grand Canyon-size. I think this administration has fundamentally miscalculated how out of step they are with the American people."

Media Alert: Americans United for Life Announces Legal Prospectus on Probable Supreme Court Nominees

May 15, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Today, Americans United for Life, AUL, Announces Legal Prospectus on Probable Supreme Court Nominees

Washington, DC -- Americans United for Life (AUL) announces today a new legal prospectus on the probable "short list" of President Obama's Supreme Court nominees, and their records on life issues. AUL is the nation's first national pro-life organization and the leading legal and public policy organization in the pro-life movement.

The comprehensive, concise document identifies nine probable nominees and highlights cases, past writings, opinions, and arguments indicating affinities for pro-abortion activism. In addition, it explains how past interpretations by some of the individuals could be applied to future rulings on life issues. The prospectus also identifies personal endorsements of and political contributions to extreme, pro-abortion activist groups.

For example, Solicitor General Elena Kagan tops many 'short-lists' and yet she has publicly and repeatedly criticized federal regulations that prohibit federally funded abortion counseling. Kagan argues that the regulations amount to the subsidization of "anti-abortion" speech. Another short-list topper, Judge Diane Wood, has disputed the constitutionality of partial-birth abortion bans enacted in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Tony Mauro at The Blog of Legal Times writes, Anti-Abortion Rights Group: Thumbs Down For Supreme Court Short List,

Americans United for Life, a leading anti-abortion rights group, has issued a negative appraisal of many of the presumed short-list possible nominees to replace retiring Justice David Souter. The group's analysis seems to guarantee that abortion rights will become a rallying cry in the coming debate, no matter whom President Barack Obama nominates.

In a release announcing the analysis Charmaine Yoest, president of the organization, says, "The records of these potential nominees are absolutely the most radically pro-abortion our country has ever seen. Every potential nominee is pro-abortion and would advance President Obama's radical agenda." She vowed to "make the pro-life voice heard" during the confirmation process.

May 14, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine was quoted by SHERYL GAY STOLBERG in The New York Times, On Abortion, Obama Is Drawn Into Debate He Had Hoped to Avoid, Published: May 14, 2009,

WASHINGTON -- In nearly four months in office, President Obama has pursued a careful two-pronged strategy on abortion, enacting policies that secure a woman's right to the procedure while vowing to move beyond the culture wars that have divided the nation on the issue for more than three decades.

Now, Mr. Obama is suddenly in the thick of the battle he had hoped to transcend, and his delicate balancing act is being put to the test...

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said she told allies that their movement was emerging from "eight years in the wilderness."

But even as Mr. Obama has delighted abortion rights advocates, he has dialed back some earlier ambitions. In 2007, he promised Planned Parenthood that "the first thing I'd do as president" would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which effectively codifies Roe v. Wade...

But religious conservatives and more ardent abortion opponents who have not been included say Mr. Obama is trying to have it both ways. Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, an advocacy group, said that if the president really wanted to forge consensus, he would advocate rules allowing parents to be notified if their teenage daughters sought an abortion and banning the procedure known as partial-birth abortion. As an Illinois state senator, Mr. Obama voted "present" on such initiatives, enabling their defeat....

Washington Wire, Political Insight and Analysis From The Wall Street Journal's Capital Bureau, Judicial Advocacy Groups Prepare for Supreme Court Battle, Susan Davis reports on politics,

Judicial advocacy groups are already drawing battle lines for a Supreme Court fight following news that Justice David Souter will retire at the end of the term.

Americans United for Life, a group that opposes abortion rights, said they will oppose any nominee who supports the Freedom of Choice Act to "elevate abortion to a fundamental right on the same place as the freedom of speech," said president Dr. Charmaine Yoest. Adding: "Justice Souter's retirement also represents a test for the Senate: will they uphold their duty to raise serious questions over a nominee's judicial philosophy?"

Posturing on Supreme Court Pick Continues; No Selection Likely This Week
By Seth Stern, CQ Staff

Republicans warned Tuesday against rushing a Supreme Court nominee through the Senate, even as Democrats said no announcement of a successor to Justice David H. Souter would come this week.

In timing his first nomination to the nation's highest court, President Obama is balancing competing political imperatives: He needs to wait long enough that key senators in both parties feel that he seriously entertained their suggestions and weighed their advice. But waiting too long would give his conservative critics the opportunity to mobilize and to attack potential candidates pre-emptively -- making it more difficult for the Senate to confirm a new justice prior to the August recess....

Conservative activists urged Republicans not to allow Democrats to rush the process. Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] president of Americans United for Life, urged Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the Judiciary Committee's new ranking Republican, "to begin your role as ranking minority member by putting the brakes on rushing through a Supreme Court nominee."

Political Fight Already Brewing Over Souter Retirement, By John Stanton, Roll Call Staff, Reports: Supreme Court Justice David Souter to Retire at End of Term

Battle lines over President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court nominee were quickly solidifying Friday morning, even as the White House and Capitol Hill continued to wait for the official word that Justice David Souter would retire this summer...

While politicians at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue may be waiting to comment until Obama receives a formal communication on Souter's intentions, interest groups were wasting no time drawing lines in the sand over a looming Senate confirmation fight.

Charmaine Yoest
, president of Americans United for Life, warned in a statement Friday morning that anti-abortion-rights organizations would vigorously oppose any nominee that interprets the Constitution to include protections for abortion.

"We will work to oppose any nominee for the Supreme Court who will read the Freedom of Choice Act into the Constitution in order to elevate abortion to a fundamental right on the same plane as the freedom of speech. In his search for a replacement for Justice Souter, President Obama should avoid a pro-abortion litmus test," Yoest said.

Marge Baker, executive vice president at People for the American Way, urged Obama to stick by his campaign pledge to tap nominees who bring a level of empathy for minorities, the poor and women.

UPI, Abortion key issue in replacing Souter,

WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- Abortion rights will occupy a prominent place in the political battle to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, say those on each side of the issue.

"Without a doubt, opponents of women's freedom and privacy will use a vacancy on the court as an opportunity to further their attacks on nominees who have taken pro-choice positions, " said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the abortion rights group.

Difficulties encountered by several of President Barack Obama's choices for federal posts prove anti-abortion groups retain the power to derail the president's agenda, despite the Democratic majority in Congress, said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

"This new administration and the congressional majority may support radical abortion rights, but the American people as a whole do not," Yoest said.

Talking smart about Obama's Supreme Court pick

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, sent a letter to Senate Democrat Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy yesterday that was pretty brilliant....

Recall President Abortion indicated during the campaign he admired Supreme Court justices Stephen Breyer and David Souter. Both are so fanatically pro-abortion they voted twice (2000 and 2007) against the Partial Birth Abortion Ban, meaning Obama supports Supremes so entrenched they will even support a barbaric abortion procedure killing a half-born baby contrary to the will of the people, since 30 states had passed PBA bans by 2000.

Of course. Obama himself opposed the PBA Ban and also infamously stated during the campaign his primary focus as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which would overturn every local, state, and federal restriction made against abortion in the past 36 years....

Abortion issue looms over Supreme Court choice
Antiabortion groups have opposed Senate confirmation of Sebelius and two Justice nominees with varying success. And those activists are expected to have a voice on Obama's pick for high court.
By James Oliphant

Conservative activists have brought the most explosive weapon in their arsenal -- the issue of abortion rights -- to bear against a trio of President Obama's nominees for other posts, offering a likely preview of what to expect when Obama's choice to replace retiring Justice David H. Souter comes before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
...

"This new administration and the congressional majority may support radical abortion rights, but the American people as a whole do not," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

Press Release: AUL Comments on Reported Retirement of Justice David Souter from the Supreme Court

By Daniel McConchie | May 1, 2009

"Pro-abortion Supreme Court nominee will read Freedom of Choice Act into the Constitution."

WASHINGTON - Major media outlets are reporting that United State Supreme Court Justice David Souter has informed the White House that he plans to retire at the end of the Court's current term.

Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President & CEO of Americans United for Life, stated, "We will work to oppose any nominee for the Supreme Court who will read the Freedom of Choice Act into the Constitution in order to elevate abortion to a fundamental right on the same plane as the freedom of speech. In his search for a replacement for Justice Souter, President Obama should avoid a pro-abortion litmus test."

Dr. Yoest continued, "This nomination represents a test for a President who has expressed a public commitment to reducing abortions while pursuing an aggressive pro-abortion agenda. Appointing an abortion radical to the Court -- someone who believes social activism trumps the Constitution - further undermines efforts to reduce abortion. In the days ahead, Justice Souter's retirement also represents a test for the Senate: will they uphold their duty to raise serious questions over a nominee's judicial philosophy?"

"The irony is that even many abortion rights supporters agree that Roe v. Wade was poorly decided," Yoest said. "One person often cited as a potential Obama pick, legal scholar Cass Sunstein, has argued that Roe 'badly overreached' and that the decision rests on shaky constitutional foundations."

Regarding Souter's tenure on the Court, Americans United for Life Senior Counsel Clarke D. Forsythe stated, "Justice David Souter is one of the most pro-abortion members of the United State Supreme Court. During his tenure, Justice Souter voted to uphold abortion on demand and to strike down common sense abortion regulations that the vast majority of Americans support. He voted in 2000 and again in 2007 to strike down prohibitions on the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion. As many votes on abortion have been 5-4 decisions, his presence on the Court has extended the tragedy of abortion by restricting the right of states to make their own decisions on abortion law."

Pro-Life Legal Guide
by Americans United for Life

April 22, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

AUL, a non-profit law firm, publishes a yearly review of incremental initiatives -- model legislation -- that states can use to protect women and unborn babies.

There are some 670 laws to regulate abortion in the nation. The Freedom of Choice Act or FOCA would eliminate each of these state controls on the abortion industry.

For example, if FOCA was signed into law by Obama non-doctors across America could do abortions:

+ Any school nurse could do the abortion surgery.
+ Any school nurse could do the abortion surgery in the school clinic.
+ Any school nurse could do the abortion surgery on any school age girl.
+ Any school nurse could do the abortion surgery on any school age girl without mom knowing.
+ All abortions done by your school nurse on your little girl will be paid for with your tax dollars.

The Pro-life Legal Guide belongs in every lawyer's library.

MEDIA ALERT: Charmaine Quoted in World Net Daily MATTERS OF LIFE AND DEATH

April 21, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine was interviewed in WND, By Drew Zahn, Obama presidency awakens pro-life movement 'For 8 years we had President Bush and his veto pen - we don't anymore'

"There was a concern that after the president was elected, the pro-life movement would be so demoralized that it would be almost a death blow," said Charmaine Yoest, charmaine_wnd.jpgpresident and chief executive officer of Americans United for Life, the oldest national pro-life organization in the country. "But in fact, just the opposite is true."

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

Yoest told WND that news of Obama's victory in November launched an immediate surge of pro-life activism, including over 700,000 people who have signed the group's petition to stop the Freedom of Choice Act, which Obama has said he would support and sign into law upon passage through Congress.

"Immediately after the election, our servers melted down from so many people looking to take a stand against an abortion agenda," Yoest told WND. "Subsequently, what we've found over the last several months is that every time we've asked people on that list to do something, the response has been overwhelming."

Which Stem Cell Research is "Shovel Ready"?

March 20, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine was interviewed by Dan Gilgoff for USN&WR on the morality of embryonic stem cell research.

Charmaine used the Octo-Mom as a current events hook. (See Charmaine on Huckabee The Video.)

Dan Gilgoff writes in God & Country, Octo-Mom as a Poster Girl for Opponents of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Do conservative Christians opposed to using excess embryos from IVF clinics for stem cell research really want to be citing the octo-mom as a poster girl for their cause? With 14 children and no husband, Nadya Suleman hardly appears to have created the healthful home life that the pro-family movement advocates...

No, Dan, the Octo-Mom is not a poster girl...

He missed the point. (Alert the Media! Main Stream Media Misses Argument!)

However, Dan Gilgoff did publish Charmaine's rebuttal, Americans United for Life President Rebuts Octo-Mom as Poster Girl Charge.

###

Jill Stanek is on point and more pointed as always. She writes, US News & World Report's ludicrous claim: Octomom is Yoest/Stanek's "poster girl"

Dan Gilgoff of US News & World Report wrote an insulting piece today, "Octo-Mom as a poster girl for opponents of embryonic stem cell research," a typical example of MSM spinning a story to fit the liberal agenda.

More from Americans United for Life on embryonic stem cell reseach in Human Events,

[T]he National Institutes of Health spent nearly $1 billion tax dollars on stem cell research in FY 2008. Adult stem cell research received more funding because it was better science and was actually helping patients -- clinical trials are very expensive. If Obama were truly looking for "shovel ready" research projects able to produce real results, embryonic stem cell research would not make the list.
...
If the justification for such research is the hope of developing successful therapies, only adult stem cells have a demonstrated track record of success.

Obama has been disingenuous in claiming that he is freeing up monies for such research for the first time. Stem cell research -- publicly and privately funded -- has been going on for more than a decade.

But what is often lost in all of the reports about stem cell research is the critical difference -- both in terms of real results and ethical controversy -- between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells.

Georgia Legislators Pass Law Allowing Adoption of Embryos, Constitutional Law , Politics , Religion , Society -- with this knee-slapper,

This week, the Georgia state House of Representatives voted 96-66 to adopt a bill allowing for people to legally adopt as parents embryos that can be implanted in in vitro fertilization procedures. The legislation is defended by Clarke Forsythe, senior counsel of Americans United for Life, as responsive to "the need to humanize the embryonic human at a time when at the federal level embryonic stem cell research is being promoted."

There has been an effort to recognize embryos as separate living beings as part of a pro-life agenda. Colorado recently moved to declare fertilized eggs as people.

It is not clear what one gets for a newly adoptive couple of a frozen embryo. Travel coolers and hot ice are possible options.

Lethal Experimentation on Human Beings: Roe's Effect on Bioethics,

There is no mystery about when human life begins. It is only within the political and ideological context that this matter is contested...

When the matter is not being debated in a courtroom or on the floor of the Congress, when it is left for scientific analysis, the resolution is clear.

Human life begins, in the normal, ordinary case, at "conception," that is to say, at fertilization...

March 2, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

sebelius_dress.jpgCharmaine at AUL was interviewed by the Associated Press by phone while we were in Laguna Niguel over the weekend.

Sebelius, credit: Tony's Kansas City

JOHN HANN writes, Abortion foes vow to fight a Sebelius nomination,

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- National anti-abortion groups promise a vigorous fight if President Barack Obama nominates Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as U.S. health and human services secretary....

"It's not just that she has a pro-abortion rights viewpoint," said Charmaine Yoest, president and chief executive officer of Americans United for Life Action. "It's her very close association with one of the most infamous abortionists in this country."...

Abortion foes said Friday an important issue is a reception Sebelius once had with a late-term abortion provider who's now facing criminal charges.

Administration officials disputed the idea that abortion is an issue as to whether Obama nominates Sebelius. She is considered a leading candidate for the HHS job, although the White House has said others are being considered.

Abortion opponents acknowledged Friday that they'll probably be uncomfortable with nearly anyone Obama nominates, but they're particularly upset by the prospect of Sebelius.

A major reason is an event in April 2007 at the governor's residence with Dr. George Tiller and his Wichita clinic's staff. Abortion foes eventually obtained photos from the reception and posted them last year on the Internet.

Charmaine's reports that Sebelius opposes and has voted against Parental Notification and safe, clinical standards for abortion offices. See the Americans United for Life Action blog,

The need for this critical legislation was predicated, in large part, on evidence of shocking conditions in Kansas abortion clinics.

For example, two inspections of the same Topeka abortion clinic discovered fetal remains stored in the same refrigerator as food;

a dead rodent in the clinic hallway;

overflowing, uncovered disposal bins containing medical waste;

unlabeled, pre-drawn syringes with controlled substances in an unlocked refrigerator;

improperly labeled and expired medicines; carpeted floor in the surgical procedure room; and visible dirt and general disarray throughout the clinic.

Dr. Krishna Rajanna, who operated the unsanitary clinic, also consistently violated the practice guidelines for conscious sedation.

These unsanitary medical practices would close a restaurant, let alone an abortion office. Other issues that disqualify Sebelius,

On balance, Gov. Sebelius' record demonstrates that she is unfit to serve as HHS Secretary and should not be in a position to make such important policy determinations including:

* Whether to rescind, modify, or retain HHS rules requiring that recipients of certain federal funding certify their compliance with existing federal law supporting healthcare fights of conscience;

* Whether to expand the over-the-counter availability of abortifacients such as "Plan B" (so-called "emergency contraception") to allow minors to obtain these controversial and dangerous drugs without a prescription or doctor's involvement; and

* Whether to rescind approval for or, at a minimum, review the safety and efficacy of RU-486 ("the abortion pill") which has killed at least 7 women in the U.S. since it was approved by the FDA in September 2000.

Alert Readers know that Your Business Blogger(R) worked in a restaurant as a teenager. My boss was always worried that the Health Department Inspector might find some random rat dropping. My restaurant manager would have nothing to fear if Sebelius was the governor. Sebelius is not qualified to oversee a food service business. By Jeff Mason and Deborah Charles (Additional reporting by Ed Stoddard)

WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday lifted restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush...

"When we wake up every morning to a deepening financial crisis, it is an insult to the American people to bail out the abortion industry," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

"Planned Parenthood is a billion-dollar company and they do not need additional resources to burden the American taxpayer."...

The United States spends more than $400 million on overseas family planning assistance each year.

Jon Ward writes in The Washington Times, Obama changes policy on abortion, Saturday, January 24, 2009

"What a terrible way to begin a new administration: with an abortion business bailout that will exploit women in developing countries for political ends," said Charmaine Yoest, President of Americans United for Life Action.
...
Mr. Obama's promise to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which would repeal all state and local restrictions on abortion, such as parental notification laws and measures allowing physicians to deny abortions based on their own faith convictions, came under fire Thursday from congressional Republicans.

LAURA MECKLER reports in The Wall Street Journal, Obama Intends to Lift Family-Planning 'Gag Rule'; Move Would Restore Funds to International Groups Involved With Abortion; Timing Shows Sensitivity to Foes of Roe v. Wade,

Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, thinks the change in policy amounts to U.S. tax dollars funding abortion and sees no positive outcome.

LifeNews.com Editor, Steven Ertelt, reports
Pro-Life Advocates: Obama Has Already Betrayed Promise to Reduce Abortions
January 23, 2009,

Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] the president of Americans United for Life, also responded to the news.

"What a terrible way to begin a new administration: with an abortion business bailout that will exploit women in developing countries for political ends," she told LifeNews.com.

"We should not export the tragedy of abortion to other nations, and we certainly shouldn't do so via the hard-earned dollars of American taxpayers," she said.

Denise Burke, [Americans United for Life] Vice President of Legal Affairs said the move also creates foreign policy headaches because it has the U.S. funding pro-abortion groups that are actively lobbying other nations to reverse their long-standing pro-life laws.

"Pro-abortion organizations like the International Planned Parenthood Federation are actively working to impose radically pro-abortion laws on developing nations, showing no regard for the will of the people in these countries," she said. "This move is a significant step backwards in respecting the sovereignty of nations, in empowering women, and in protecting unborn."

Yesterday, on the eve of the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v Wade decision, 105 Members of Congress sent a letter to President Obama requesting that he reconsider his support for overturning pro-life laws--even laws enacted by the States. Specifically we asked the President to withdraw his pledge to sign the so-named Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which would in one tragic act overturn virtually all pro-life laws nationwide, and to refuse to support policies that incrementally enact the FOCA agenda by rescinding or weakening existing pro-life laws....

Charmaine Quoted in The Wall Street Journal;
Planned Parenthood Forbids the Science of the Sonogram

January 23, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

cecile_richards_obama.jpgWhile we were marching in yesterday's March for Life, Charmaine was interviewed by the WSJ on the Obama Abortion Bail Out executive order.

Cecile Richards, from Planned Parenthood and Obama

The reporter, LAURA MECKLER, asked about the current Mexico City Accord which prohibits USA taxpayers funding education on "reproductive freedom" to other countries. (The Alert Reader knows well that reproductive freedom/education is code for abortion.) The reporter also asked about Obama's "sensitivity" on not signing the abortion bailout on the anniversary of Roe v Wade; 22 January -- a day Pro-Lifers yearly recognize as the day the Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 57 50 states. Abortion is now legal through all nine months of pregnancy.

Meckler wrote,

...[A]bortion opponents were not mollified. Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] president of Americans United for Life, thinks the change in policy amounts to U.S. tax dollars funding abortion and sees no positive outcome. But she called the delayed timing "a politically savvy move" by the White House.

Meckler also interviewed Cecile Richards,

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which offers abortion and family planning, says she doesn't care when President Obama changes the policy, as long as it is changed. "He has clearly stated his opposition to the global gag rule and his intention to overturn it," she said.

Cecile Richards makes money selling and preforming abortions. If women and other countries cannot afford an abortion. The American tax payer will now pay for them in a Planned Parenthood office.

sonogram_side_by_side.jpg

There is one gag rule that Cecile Richards demands that Obama not change: No pregnant woman should see a sonogram of her baby.

85 percent of women who see the first picture of the child, do not have an abortion.

Planned Parenthood cannot have the science of the sonogram help women to choose.

Fight FOCA on Sanctity of Life Sunday

January 15, 2009 | By Jack Yoest

charmaine_obamacon_me_yoest.pngSanctity of Life Sunday is being celebrated on the 18th -- before the March for Life on Thursday, January 22nd.

In between these two dates, the most pro-abortion president in history, Barack Obama, will be sworn in on Tuesday the 20th.

What a week.

Alert Reader Gary K sends us Charmaine's ObamaCon.me

Americans United for Life has a church bulletin insert available to alert voters on the Obama abortion agenda. See the full page insert here. Read Charmaine's letter at the jump.

The Family Research Council writes,

"Blogs for Life is scheduled to take place the day of the 36th annual March for Life, during which hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates gather in the nation's capitol to celebrate life and demand the reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

The conference will feature several prominent conservative voices including Senator Sam Brownback, Amanda Carpenter, Jill Stanek, Michael New, Ph.D., Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D., Michael Illions, Chris Gacek, J.D. and Martha Shuping, M.D. all speaking with bloggers live from Family Research Council headquarters."

To date almost 425,000 people have signed the FightFOCA petition.

It just might get Obama's attention.

Because it is the right thing to do.

How can Your Business Blogger(R) be so sure?

Because Chuck Norris approves of FightFOCA.

Chuck Norris writes at Human Events,

"Please, before FOCA flies onto the congressional floor in the upcoming days, sign the online petition to fight FOCA (www.fightfoca.com), and then contact your representatives and senators to tell them how you expect them to vote on the bill."

Chuck Norris is always right. He's smart. As The Dude says, 'Chuck Norris can divide by zero.'

Pro-Life; Preparing for an Obama Abortion Administration

December 30, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

aul_logo.jpgCharmaine sends this along,

As we prepare for an Obama Administration...

As we look toward celebrating the New Year on Wednesday night, my email box is filling up with end-of-year appeals, and I know yours is too.

Let me then be plain in telling you how much we appreciate your partnership with AUL this past year and as we head into the new one.

Many people have been asking me how things stand, and what our strategy will be, with an incoming presidential administration that has taken such a radical stance supporting abortion. The short answer: I am, frankly, heartened by the tremendous response of our AUL supporters each time we've asked you to stand for life.

First, we saw the remarkable response to AUL Action's FightFOCA petition. Pro-lifers are not giving in!

The signatures have continued rising, even over the Christmas
holiday, and now stand at over 350,000!

If you haven't signed yet, take a minute and add your voice at: www.FightFOCA.com.

I am also heartened by the response of AUL supporters to the 55-page Wish List pro-abortion forces sent to President-elect Obama. We asked you to enter comments on the document and now there are nearly 3,000 comments, mostly pro-life, on the site.

You can read them here: http://change.gov/open_government/entry/advancing_reproductive_rights_and_health_in_a_new_administration.

US News and World Report noted the surge in comments and observed that:

"But the volume of comments also shows that the pro-life movement is very much engaged right now and can be quickly activated."

That's encouraging!

Of course, a realist must acknowledge that no one really knows what the ground game will look like once we begin confronting an administration so radical that its leader, President-elect Obama, could not bring himself to vote in favor of protecting babies born alive after an abortion. And he is unwaveringly supported by the current leader of the world's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood and its President Cecile Richards, who was the deputy chief of staff to the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi only three years ago.
donate_now.png
Even so -- even so! -- I remain hopeful. I have on my fireplace mantle a copy of the classic work, Streams in the Desert, which belonged to my grandparents. The entry to be read each January 6th, addresses the perennial question of uncertainty and recounts the example of the self-opening gate:

There is a self-opening gate which is sometimes used in country roads. It stands fast and firm across the road as a traveler approaches it. If he stops before he gets to it, it will not open. But if he will drive right at it, his wagon wheels press the springs below the roadway, and the gate swings back to let him through. He must push right on at the closed gate, or it will continue to be closed.

Then the author, Lettie Cowman, sums up by saying, "This illustrates the way to pass every barrier on the road of duty."

Duty is an old-fashioned word, rarely heard today. But the AUL team believes that it is indeed our duty, and a high calling, to stand against those who would promote the Culture of Death with every last resource that God grants us, regardless of the barriers that block the road ahead.

We will pray for wisdom, direction, and discernment. And then, we intend to run straight at the gate.

These are difficult times. I've talked with so many of you recently who have told me that you are standing with us, despite financial challenges. We are humbled -- and emboldened -- by your commitment.

Thank you for your faithful support which enables us to "press on and step out boldly."

Yours for life,

Tell Obama To Stop Supporting FOCA

Tell Obama To Stop Supporting FOCA

Pro-abortion forces have given President-elect Obama 55 pages of instructions on what to do when he becomes President. A top priority? The "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA).

Some insist FOCA isn't a real threat, that we can stop it easily. But that's not what pro-life leaders on Capitol Hill are saying.

Last week, I was in a meeting with Representative Mike Pence of Indiana -- one of the key incoming House leaders -- and he listed FOCA as one of the top four threats he sees in the next few months.

The Obama transition website has posted the 55-page pro-abortion marching order and opened it up for comment.

Let's tell him to ignore it.

Click here to ask President-elect Obama to stop supporting FOCA. FOCA would eliminate every abortion-related law nationwide -- even common-sense laws that protect women and minors -- and force us to pay for the radical pro-abortion agenda with our tax dollars.

We can do it!

May you and your family have a Blessed Christmas.

Brad Feld writes,

As I work my way through Vonnegut, my inner cynic is rewarded with gems from 40 years ago. For example:

Kilgore Trout (near the end of the book): "The problem is this: How to love people who have no use? In time, almost all men and women will become worthless as producers of goods, food, services, and more machines, as sources of practical ideas in the areas of economics, engineering, and probably medicine, too. So - if we can't find reasons and methods for treasuring human beings because they are human beings, then we might as well, as has so often been suggested, rub them out."

Don't try to understand it - it won't really make any sense without the context of the rest of the book. But - if you want a good jolt, read the book. One thing is for certain: Vonnegut knows how to string words together in a magical way.

Brad is a hi-tech, very bright, successful entrepreneur from Colorado. He supports abortion on demand: Abortion anytime for any reason; we might as well, as has so often been suggested, rub them out... Liberals are not logical.

If you win against IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich, you might be on the side of the angels.

Charmaine was interviewed for CitizenLink, a division of Focus on the Family, Good News: Illinois Pharmacists Can Challenge Discriminatory Rule,

"This is a huge victory for the freedom of conscience of all health care providers," said Dr. Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life. "Pharmacists now have proper recourse against a discriminatory law that would force them to check their constitutional rights at the workplace door."

CitizenLink also quotes AUL's legal eagle Denise Burke,

in Good News: Regulations Protect Doctors' Freedom of Conscience

Life advocates are praising the timing of new government rules that protect health care providers' freedom of conscience.

The Department of Health and Human Services put the regulations in place last week to reinforce rules that protect doctors from being forced to participate in abortion and other anti-life practices.

"By releasing them now, they will be in the federal register for 30 days before the Obama administration takes office," said Denise Burke, vice president and legal director for Americans United for Life. "For that reason, the Obama administration cannot simply erase these rules."

Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards does not care for rights of conscience. (Except her own conscience -- don't even think about asking her about her own abortion.) David G. Savage at LA Times writes, Health providers' 'conscience' rule to take effect

"We are shocked that the Bush administration chose to finalize its midnight regulation and to take this parting shot at women's health and ignore patients' rights to receive critical healthcare services and information they deserve," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement. "We look forward to working with President-elect Obama and leaders in Congress to repeal this disastrous rule and expand patients' access to full healthcare information and services, not limit it."

Media Alert: Charmaine Debates Planned Parenthood
Gift Cards on MSNBC

December 4, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

planned_parenthood_giftcard_2008_holiday.JPG Over 50 per cent of Americans will purchase gift cards this year.

Will you be getting one from Planned Parenthood?

Not likely.

Americans don't like to talk about abortion.

Much less paying for one.

Leslie Olsen at WISHtv.com writes,

Gift certificates for Planned Parenthood,

The certificates come in $25 increments.

"They can be [used] for sexually transmitted disease screenings,..." said Struben-Hall.

Some Hoosiers 24-Hour News 8 talked to asked if the gift certificates could be used towards abortions. The answer is yes. But, Planned Parenthood said that's not the purpose of the gift certificates.

planned_parenthood_cash.jpgPlanned Parenthood earns income from abortions and is attempting to re-brand their image. They are attempting to emphasize birth control (from Planned Parenthood's early days in eugenics) away from abortion; the Final Solution Birth Control.

But abortion is, well, birth control and a revenue stream for Planned Parenthood.

Charmaine will be on MSNBC News Now today, Thursday, December 3rd Eastern. Hit time is 2:30.

Please tune in and let us know how you think the marketing debate went.

***

Marketing is reach, frequency and awareness. Planned Parenthood is using constant repetition -- frequency -- to persuade the public that they are (Reproductive) Health Clinics and not Abortion clinics.

Planned Parenthood does not want the public to be aware that the new gift cards could be used for abortions.

Leslie Olsen continues,

Planned Parenthood hopes philanthropists look at it differently. The organization hopes people might purchase the certificates, and then turn them back in for their patients who need reproductive healthcare, but can't pay for it.

Planned Parenthood is not even pretending to sell the gift cards for services -- the cards are simply a re-gifting vector for donations.

planned_parenthood_condom_keychain.jpg Planned Parenthood Condom Key Chains
Gift card sales totaled $97 billion in 2007, up from $83 billion in 2006, according to data from The Tower Group cited in The New York Times.

Gift Certificate usage among recipients is about 85 per cent, meaning that some 15 per cent are never redeemed.

This means that some 15 billion dollars are left on the table -- money consumers paid and that businesses didn't have to deliver.

One of Your Business Blogger(R)'s clients in India sells pre-paid phone cards. He loves them and the cash-flow. He says, "One in seven cards are never used; cash straight to the bottom line, upfront."

The low redemption rate of gift cards has spawned an opportunity for entrepreneurs to collect and repackage and re-sell. Cash re-gifting. The data on the secondary market for gift cards is fascinating: 1 adult in 6 "re-gifts" a Gift Certificate.

But I doubt that there would be a gray market for the Planned Parenthood Gift Certificates.

(Ramesh Ponnuru reminds us, "No mother wants to introduce her son, the abortionist." No one is going to give or re-gift a gift card, "Here's $50 toward your next abortion...
Here's a Benjamin for your next STD...")

There is much confusion on the Abortionist's money making Industry. But what is sure is that no one wants to talk about that most common of surgical procedures: elective abortions.

***
Your Business Blogger(R) has an interest in a number of advertising and promotional companies. So I am most interested in the branding methods that Planned Parenthood uses in the marketing of their "health" services.

The Planned Parenthood Condom Key Chain line is one of my "favorites." I am not so sure that it is a big seller...

Planned Parenthood, Wear Your Rubbers

planned_parenthood_wear-your-rubbers-keychain.jpg In a fashion, we applaud Planned Parenthood for their marketing innovation to attract donations.

Go get money directly from the public. Then maybe Planned Parenthood will not demand the 300 million tax dollars from Americans who do not want to pay for anyone's abortions.

This is not likely: Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood earns a million dollar salary to manage the Planned Parenthood billion dollar empire. To get all the revenue she can -- even bailouts from the taxpayer.

Americans United for Life & FOCA

November 24, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

ANALYSIS-Activists hope Obama acts on abortion rights By Ed Stoddard,

DALLAS, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Abortion rights activists, an important component of the Democratic Party's base, expect to advance their agenda under U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, signaling fresh battles over the highly charged issue.

Changes could take place in areas from judicial appointments to overseas aid. Obama strongly supports abortion rights, in stark contrast to President George W. Bush, a social conservative who often talked of a "culture of life" -- code for opposition to abortion.

Obama supports his Party of Death. Bush supports the "Culture of Life." In policy as well as "code word."

Reuters continues,

On the policy front, activists and analysts say an early skirmish could come over federal funding for nongovernmental organizations that offer abortion operations or counseling in family planning services abroad.

"Family planning services" are "code words" for abortion on demand through all nine months and beyond -- if the infant is born alive.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards told Reuters in interviews that rolling back the rule was among their top political priorities.

Abortion rights opponents, many of whom on religious grounds regard the procedure as murder, see any move on that front as the next shot in the abortion wars.

"To reintroduce funding for it internationally is very offensive because there are even people who describe themselves as pro-choice, but don't want to be involved in public funding for it," said Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] president of Americans United for Life Action, which opposes abortion rights.

Ed Stoddard notes in FightFOCA.com that,

Capitol Hill "Daily Brief" has FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT,
The nation's premier pro-life legal organization has launched a new project aimed at stopping passage of the most radical pro-abortion legislation in the nation's history. With the full support of President- elect Barack Obama, congressional Democrats are poised to pass the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), a law that will make abortion a "fundamental right" much the same as the right to vote and the right to free speech. By doing so, this new federal law would automatically invalidate every federal, state and local law placing even the most common sense restrictions on abortion.

And more.

PERSEVERANCE REQUIRED ! ! !

Clarke Forsythe, senior counsel for Americans United for Life believes the election was about the economy and, in no way, a repudiation of pro-life principles.

"It is very difficult to keep pro-life and other issues of justice at the center of public life in the midst of war and economic crisis," he told Zenit News Service.

"William Wilberforce's campaign against the slave trade in Great Britain during the 1790s -- which was derailed by the French Revolution, war with France, economic crises and terrible harvests -- is a good example. But Wilberforce (and his allies) persevered and things turned around over considerable time"

FOCA Would Wipe Away Every Restriction on Abortion Nationwide.

This would eradicate state and federal laws that the majority of Americans support, such as:

* Bans on Partial Birth Abortion
* Requirements that women be given information about the risks of getting an abortion
* Only licensed physicians can perform abortions
* Parents must be informed and give consent to their minor daughter's abortion

FOCA would erase these laws and prevent states from enacting similar protective measures in the future.

Obama has promised to restore federal funding to international family planning services, that is, his administration will financially support institutions around the globe that perform abortions. Obama has also promised to sign FOCA or the Freedom of Choice Act. Anti-abortion activists are mobilising for a battle as they now realise they no longer have an ally in the White House.

Americans United for Life is gathering up signatures at a frantic pace to oppose FOCA.

CNSNews.com has Catholics Who Vote for Freedom of Choice Act Could Face Automatic Excommunication, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago says,

"Parental notification and informed consent precautions would be outlawed, as would be laws banning procedures such as partial-birth abortion and protecting infants born alive after a failed abortion. Abortion clinics would be deregulated," said George.

"The Hyde Amendment restricting the federal funding of abortions would be abrogated. FOCA would have lethal consequences for prenatal human life," he said.

"FOCA would have an equally destructive effect on the freedom of conscience of doctors, nurses and health care workers whose personal convictions do not permit them to cooperate in the private killing of unborn children," George continued.

"It would threaten Catholic health care institutions and Catholic Charities. It would be an evil law that would further divide our country, and the Church should be intent on opposing evil. On this issue, the legal protection of the unborn, the bishops are of one mind with Catholics and others of good will."

Warning: Adult material. Safe for work, maybe. Charmaine's had a dozen gigs on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. The following episode features Hustler Magazine publisher, Larry Flynt, Musician Edwin McCain (no relation to John McCain) and Actor Steve Hytner.

Charmaine was on to flog her book Mother in the Middle: Searching for Peace in the Mommy Wars.

Charmaine on CNN Debating Condoms;
Obama Will Export Abortion-Condom Funding Overseas

November 17, 2008 | By Charmaine Yoest

Warning: The Condom Commercial is for mature audiences.

In the 1990's CNN had a terrific talking-heads-shouting-show called Crossfire. Regular Hosts included Michael Kinsley, liberal, then moved to Slate. Pat Buchanan, conservative, former GOP, now gone from the Republican Club but still Pro-Life.

The show ran five nights a week for 30 minutes. Hosts earned about $200K and were worth every dime.

Charmaine appeared in a number of segments. In this episode she debated Kristine Gebbie from the Clinton administration on the marketing and efficacy of condoms. Charmaine's points are valid today -- truth is, well, timeless. John Sununu is in the conservative chair, on the right, of course.

Oddly, liberals demand that conservatives use science in any debate -- but whenever a conservative uses real science with real data, we are then accused of "imposing our values." A liberal pivot.

The actual condom failure rate is some 20 percent. The cost of failure could be pregnancy. Could be death.

This is described by anti-science liberals as "fear based sex ed."

So what will Obama do about abortion and condoms?

Even before Obama gets legislation from congress on abortion, Obama will, by Executive Order, repeal the The Mexico City Policy (1984) which,

Prohibits the use of federal funding for organizations and programs "which perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations."

Media Alert: Obama may very well use the Clinton's Dancing Condom Marketing Campaign. For the Domestic and International markets.

Media Alert: Charmaine on The Live Desk on FOX

November 10, 2008 | By Charmaine Yoest

"The hospital can get me the operation now?" Charmaine asked.

"Sure," I said. "Where do you think you are, England?"

Charmaine's gall bladder removal was uneventful and, more important, immediate. There was no rationing of health care -- which we will get under an ObamaNation Health Plan.

That was exactly one week ago -- the latest surgical techniques have made recovery times shorter, less painful and less expensive. Good ol' American know-how.

Alert Readers will recall that Your Business Blogger(R) ran a number of medical device start up companies where we risked investors' investments to lower a patient's hospital 'length of stay' or LOS.

And the products and services made the world a better place as we improved patient care in a cost effective manner.

We assumed a risk in hope of a big payday, a big reward. Obama will kill this golden goose of innovative entrepreneurship.

Charmaine will be discussing the future on The Live Desk panel this afternoon. The other panelists will be Doug Schoen and Alex Burns.

The topics will be:

Media Alert: Charmaine In USA Today, Reuters, HuffingtonPost, Catholic OnLine

October 31, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

sonogram_side_by_side.jpgWe had a film crew from South Africa at the house today interviewing Charmaine on the campaign.

The rest of the world is confused at our continuing frictional discourse on abortion. Most of the world has real restrictions on abortion on national levels. The world does not understand that we do not.

The USA is one of the few countries in the world that has abortion on demand for any reason through all nine months (and longer under the Obama Born Alive Abortion Plan). Including China where the government makes the demand -- not the mother.

Unless the baby is a girl -- then everyone wants the child dead...

Or in India where abortion also is used for sex selection to allow only male babies born. Because boys are superior to girls as all advanced nations know.

USA abortion proponents tell us that the "health of the mother" is the only exception. Scare quotes are used in print and air quotes are used in conversation as John McCain does.

The quoting is used because the "health" issue is the exception that swallows the rule as Clarke Forsythe at Americans United for Life reminds us. Because anything, anything can be interpreted as "health." As in mental health. As in a bad hair day. Any reason is sufficient reason to abort.

There are no exceptions.

The Supreme Court has so ruled. Not we the people.

This was the background for the reporting by Joan Biskupic at USA TODAY in
Election comes at key point for high court's stance on abortion
,

"This is a historic election," says Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] president of Americans United for Life. "With the next president having the opportunity to appoint one, two or even more justices," she adds, the election could change the law "on the life issue."

Ed Stoddard at Reuters writes, Win Or Lose, Sarah Palin To Be A Political Force,

If McCain loses the exit polls will be scoured but many pundits seem likely to blame it on centrist concerns about Palin during a financial crisis.

"It's really clear that there are some people out there who would like to make her a scapegoat if things don't go their way Tuesday," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life Action, which opposes abortion rights.

"But she's has very clearly connected with the base of the party and the life and family voters and I think that is going to give her a really strong base going forward whatever happens," she said.

Jessica Arons writing at the Huffington Post has the best summation of the state-by-state, incremental Pro-Life strategy in Not All Politics Is Local: Connecting the Dots on Abortion Initiatives,

California Proposition 4 is endorsed by Americans United for Life, among others.

This is an organization that has worked to slowly erode women's access to abortion care with bills that limit available abortion methods after 12 to 13 weeks of pregnancy; require waiting periods, biased counseling, and ultrasound viewings prior to an abortion; create burdensome and medically unnecessary regulations for abortion clinics; assert that fetuses feel pain during an abortion; and allow health care employees to refuse to counsel, refer, or treat patients for any service to which they object.

She intends it to be dire and evil, but it comes out good and accurate. Something Biblical in there...

Change: Capitalism to Marxism;
Adam Smith to Barack Obama

| By Jack Yoest

bush_election_night_admission_change_1988.pngThe easiest tactic to sell anything is to find Pain. Maximize it, magnify it, monetize it.

We Are The Change, election night 1988

There is some economic Pain in the American people. Obama promises to heal this nation and heal this pain with Change.

Change from Capitalism to Marxism. To "spread the wealth around."

As Wes Pruden writes in A game-changer by Obama, we are at the close of the biggest sales and marketing pitch in history. Pruden reports,

To redistribute wealth, you first have to confiscate it from those who earned it with hard work, and the way to do that is with confiscatory taxes. Then you give it to those who didn't earn it.

But do the American people really want to change to a new economic system? A centrally controlled economy? A Change to Marxism?

Even with a half-billion dollar marketing campaign and its extension in the compliant main stream media and a single quarter of negative growth, the voters have still not bought the Barack bill of goods. Pain as bad as it's been in decades.

Barack Obama has trouble selling this Change to more than 50 percent of the public.

This means that there is still hope for capitalism in our country. Hope for our 200 year-old tradition.

Every new presidential candidate runs on some version of change. Your Business Blogger(R) joyfully attended the Election Night victory party on November 8, 1988.

The theme of the celebration? "We Are The Change." And this was from Reagan to Bush. (A Republican rockin' party...no alcohol was served 'til after 8pm.)

The word "Change" has come to mean a bit more in this campaign season in the Obama sales pitch.

We enjoy an orderly transition of power every few years. Let us pray that change is only in political individuals.

Not in an economic tradition.

***

This week, I asked my college business class when the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith was written.

"1930...?" guessed one of my better students. This was as far back as she would dare recede into ancient history. Not the 200 years to 1776.

Two hundred years of tradition that unleashed the individual's spirit to create and to provide and to enrich. Centuries of building an economic powerhouse that dominates the world. Created by American Exceptionalism.

Quin Hillyer writes at The American Spectator,

There is something special about this country. The United States is exceptional. We are blessed by the good Lord, and in turn we have done more, far more, than any other people to spread freedom across the globe, and prosperity across the globe, and human rights across this great good Earth. We are a particularly good people...

Benjamin Franklin wondered if we, a good and virtuous people, could keep a republic, a system of government that would enable the system of capitalism.

Obama promises a change to Marxism. Other changes are sure to follow, if he is elected.

###

Thank you (foot)notes,

Hillyer continues comparing McCain to Obama,

We are a particularly good people -- and John McCain understands all this and believes it with every fiber of his being, down to his very marrow, in a way that is deeply spiritual in nature.

There is nothing fake about McCain's belief in American Exceptionalism. His belief in this is as genuine, and as deeply felt, as is a son's love for his father. He will defend this country, fight for this country, with every last breath in his body...

So there you have it: John McCain as a patriot firmly rooted in the American traditions of free enterprise, limited government, strong defense, personal accountability, and a decent respect for the cultural standards of the broad middle of the American public.

Those are the constituent elements of American exceptionalism -- and to his great credit, John McCain is an American exceptionalist, and an exceptional American.

How Is The Success of an Ad Campaign Measured in a Non-Profit?

October 30, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Yesterday, Charmaine says, "We got hate mail."

"Success!" I replied.

obama_aul_letter_ohio.pngYour Business(R) Blogger teaches marketing at the local college and advises clients on the effectiveness of advertising.

AUL's Open Letter to Obama

The return on investment (ROI) in the for-profit businesses should be sales generated.

But not-for-profits have a different type of "product" peddled. The purpose of a non-profit is to improve the human condition.

So when a non-profit places a media buy, how does Your Business Blogger(R) suggest measuring success?

Hate Mail.

In for-profit, we measure love.
In non-profits, we measure hate.

Our country is evenly and bitterly divided into two competing world views. The animosity is so great and the two camps have opinions so different that we all might as well be on different planets.

We non-profit marketers are now interplanetary ambassadors. Captain Kirk never had it so hard.

So measure the "good" ad with "bad" feedback.

The Alert Reader might suggest that media hits could be an immediate proxy for any ad campaign effectiveness. But here in the non-profit world, the marketing manager should measure opposing, hateful articles, not the friendlies. Getting your friends to agree is helpful, to be sure. Getting the opposition reacting is better.

On Reasoned Audacity we limit, moderate and edit hate-comments, because most are not helpful and make for atrocious reading. Motto: Delectare et Docere.

To Please and To Instruct.

Hate-mail is not pleasing to read. A wise marketer measures this mail, crunches this data, but uses only for internals, not public consumption -- which would look like whining. Complaining about all the stoopid people on that other planet.

As Jack Welch advises: Never be a victim.

And as politicians are wont to say, "Throw a rock into a pack of dogs: the one that yelps is the one that got hit."

Measure the hits by the number of yelps.

Americans United for Life Action published an open letter in a full page in the Dayton Daily News, an Ohio newspaper . Back page, section A. Good size and location. Marketers would prefer more frequency than a one-time media buy. But a good ad "sells" in more than the buy in a particular geographic location.

Today, effective prints ads are picked up by alternative media and broadcast-cable outlets.

(Goodness, during the Huckabee campaign, Ed Rollins got media attention for an ad he didn't even run.)

See Charmaine's Open Letter to Senator Obama here and at the jump.

Read the ad and let us know if you think it "sells" -- if it persuades.

Media Alert: Charmaine to Appear on FOX
for Special Needs Children

October 24, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

baby_within_its_mother.jpgFOX reporter Molly Henneberg is doing a story on Sarah Palin's speech on Special Needs Children for Special Report tonight Friday, 24 October. Hit time is 6pm.

A baby within its mother

Charmaine will be discussing Sarah Palin's passion on this Pro-Life issue. From RealClearPolitics,

One of the most wonderful experiences in this campaign has been to see all the families of children with special needs who come out to rallies and events just like this. We have a bond there. We know that children with special needs inspire a special love. You bring your sons and daughters with you, because you are proud of them, as I am of my son.

My little fella sleeps during most of these rallies, even when they get pretty rowdy. He would be amazed to know how many folks come out to see him instead of me.

When I learned that Trig would have special needs, honestly, I had to prepare my heart. At first I was scared, and Todd and I had to ask for strength and understanding. I did a lot of praying for that understanding, and strength, and to see purpose.

And what's been confirmed in me is every child has something to contribute to the world, if we give them that chance. You know that there are the world's standards of perfection, and then there are God's, and these are the final measure. Every child is beautiful before God, and dear to Him for their own sake. And the truest measure of any society is how it treats those who are most vulnerable.

As for our baby boy, Trig, for Todd and me he is only more precious because he is vulnerable. In some ways, I think we stand to learn more from him than he does from us. When we hold Trig and care for him, we don't feel scared anymore. We feel blessed...

John McCain and I have a vision in which every child is loved and cherished, and that is the spirit I want to bring to Washington.

Every Child. Born and Unborn. Please watch and let us know what you think.

A print version of the conversation is available on Citizen Link

Life Advocates Challenge Obama over Pro-Abortion Priorities

Americans United for Life Action is calling on Sen. Barack Obama to explain why he opposes parental-involvement laws, which are designed to protect girls from sexual predators.

The letter to Obama recounts the true story of a 14-year-old Cincinnati girl who was impregnated by her 21-year-old soccer coach. The coach, who signed in place of her parents for her to have an abortion, is in jail. Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of AUL Action, said the story underscores the need for parental-involvement laws.

Yet, according to a promise made to Planned Parenthood, the first thing Obama would do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act -- a sweeping piece of legislation that could wipe away every federal, state and local law limiting or regulating abortion.

"I'd like to know why it he supports such radical legislation that would make it impossible for us to put any limitations whatsoever on abortion," Yoest said.

Charmaine Speaks at UVa; Jonah Goldberg Speaks at Emory.
Who Knew?

October 22, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

charmaine_speaking_ceadarville.GIFCharmaine and Jonah at National Review both had speaking gigs at major schools.

Q: Who Knew?
A: No one.

Charmaine lecturing on campus

I drove the wife and The Dreamer, The Dude, The Diva, The Dancer, and Baby Boo* down to Mr. Jefferson's University so Charmaine could speak on women in leadership at Darden, UVa's business school. The first thing we see are well-armed police.

Uniformed dark blue. Unsmiling.

I ask the sergeant about his job and the small gaggle of 150 women, "Crowd control?"

He looks me over. I'm holding a four-year old's hand: I am not a threat.

I am the conservative.

The cop's face moves a millimeter into what passes for a smile. His head shakes a millimeter into what passes for no.

His eyes return to the assembly. He's looking for trouble.

I speak to one of the organizers about the number of attendees, the marketing of the event...the security. (Your Business Blogger(R) cares about such things; teaching Business at the Northern Virginia Community College. Where James Carville also taught.)

The event planner whispers, "We didn't publicize the event...we weren't sure who would come..."

Even though Charmaine spent ten years at UVA, earned her Ph.D. and taught (Politics and the Family) the organizers were fearful. Charmaine, a woman and a conservative who worked for Huckabee, Pro-Life, now a president and CEO of a law firm, might cause two horrors on the Campus Grounds:

1) A violent campus protest, or, worse,

2) A good conservative turn out.

goldbergs.jpgThe police were out in force to keep pie throwing liberals away from the conservative speaker.

Or keep a woman from making a citizen's arrest.

Or having a Democrat scratch KKK on our monster SUV, the Huck-a-Truck.

and wife Jessica Gavora

The police were there to protect us from the Brown Shirts with the party of death.

The police are on the side of law and order...so far.

We have been lucky with Charmaine's public speaking in academia.

***

In a fashion, conservative Jonah has been lucky too. His speaking event at Emory was not publicized on the school website. He was not assaulted. He was ignored.

When he would rather have had a riot, I guess. (We guys like to think like this...)

A riot of ideas, please. But conservatives cannot get real "balance" in the academic setting. Goldberg writes,

It's particularly odd because the majority of the time I speak on a college campus -- even when debating a liberal -- I'm told that I'm the first conservative they've had there for a while and that I was brought in for "balance."
You'd think if that were the case, the various administrations would at least want some credit for providing equal time.
Even though, even a brief perusal of almost any college or university's events calendar will quickly show that they could have the entire masthead of National Review speak month after month and it still wouldn't equal balance...but the idea that simply inviting one or two objectively conservative speakers every couple years provides ideological balance is just absurd.

The joke is even bigger when you discover as I have at numerous schools that many professors tell their students they shouldn't go hear conservative speakers.

Jonah Goldberg gets this right: students should get both sides of any debate.

That would be, well, Fair and Balanced...

Media Alert: Charmaine Debates Eleanor Smeal on Abortion in U.K.; CNN International,
& Family Guy

October 20, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine recently debated Eleanor Smeal from the Feminist Majority Foundation on Abortion restrictions in the United Kingdom.

Alert Readers will note that the CNN International host identified Charmaine as Pro-Life. Something that never happens on this side of the pond.

The host did get a bit confused about fetus and baby. Impossible for the abortion supporter to say "baby" or "mother."

This debate becomes important here in US of A because of Obama's promise to eliminate parental notification state laws and any waiting periods. Obama does not want to regular the clinical cleanliness of abortion facilities.

The GOP is the party of life. Obama is the party of death.

Charmaine is now president and CEO of Americans United for Life.

***

This is a media war: abortion vs pro-life; liberal vs conservative; Obama vs McCain.

So. Your Business Blogger(R) homestead watched Family Guy last night.

We wanted to follow-up on the Fast Company article by Josh Dean on the Seth MacFarlane success and his $100 million deal with FOX.

The episode: Stewie, the British-accented baby and Brian the talking dog time travel back to September 1, 1939 when N@zi Germany invaded Poland. Stewie and Brian end up in Storm Trooper uniforms...with a McCain-Palin campaign button.

Funny.

But this speaks to the projection the liberals make of their world view.

Conservative politicians want to protect life. Liberals want abortion, euthanasia, denial of care.
Conservative politicians want people to keep their own money. Liberals want high taxes and your money.
Conservatives want abortion clinics regulated. Liberals want home schoolers regulated
Conservatives want to be left alone. Liberals demand power and intrusion.

Is it possible that the H!tler Youth of the 1930's might be more comfortable in today's Party of Death than with the Rascally Republicans?

Liberals have abortion clinics to get rid of unwanted life. The National Socialists had gas ovens to get rid of unwanted life.

Not that there is any connection...

Presidential Debate: Bob Schieffer,
Americans Want to Hear a Question About Abortion

charmaine_yoest_pew_2006_2.jpgAUL Action to Bob Schieffer: Americans Want to Hear a Question About Abortion

Last update: 10:21 a.m. EDT Oct. 15, 2008

WASHINGTON, Oct 15, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ --

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D. president and CEO
AUL Action

As CBS News' Bob Schieffer prepares to moderate Wednesday night's final presidential candidate debate, AUL Action President Dr. Charmaine Yoest released the following letter.

Dear Mr. Schieffer,

As you prepare for Wednesday night's final presidential debate, I know that you will be working to raise questions on domestic issues that are of interest to a wide range of Americans. I encourage you to ask each candidate about his views on abortion -- something that has not been done at either of the previous debates.

Many Americans are single-issue voters when it comes to abortion, and many more view a candidate's position on abortion as one of a handful of issues on which they select a candidate.

While each candidate's position on Roe v. Wade is well known, it remains unknown what restrictions on abortion each candidate would support in order to achieve the widely agreed upon goal of reducing abortion.

And that is the question I encourage you to ask: What restrictions on abortion would you support in order to achieve the widely agreed upon goal of reducing the number of abortions in our country?

Possible follow up questions include:

-- A recent study by Dr. Michael New (University of Alabama) found that parental involvement laws reduce abortion by 13-31%.

Do you support the right of parents to be involved in the medical decisions of their minor daughters when abortion is being considered?

-- Do you support taxpayer funding for elective abortions?

-- Do you support laws that mandate abortion clinics meet minimum health and safety standards commonly applied to other types of medical practices?

-- Do you support laws requiring abortions be performed by licensed physicians?

Particularly given that Wednesday night's debate was scheduled to focus on domestic policy, the American voters need to hear each candidate respond to at least one question that addresses the topic of abortion, which is one of the central policy questions of our day.

I wish you all the best as you prepare for and moderate the debate.
Sincerely,

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

Your Business Blogger(R) did a tour of duty in combat arms.

One of the first tasks to learn on assuming a military position was

(as Bill Clinton was slow to learn) the military salute.

Another Democrat, Obama

and the war hero,
the war injured McCain

have one thing in common with the military.

If either is elected, neither will salute.

Obama: Because he won't.

McCain: Because he can't.

***
Your Business Blogger(R) and Charmaine attended a gala tribune to Paul Weyrich, one of the founders of the Heritage Foundation and founder of Free Congress Foundation, recently in Your Nation's Capital.

It was a delight to be in a very large room with with people with big ideas. Each who loves his country.

One of the Hosts, Colin Hanna, from Let Freedom Ring, was about to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and reminded us of legislation allowing veterans to render a hand salute, even if out of uniform, even if separated from active service.

The law was made possible by Senator Jim Inhoufe of Oklahoma -- a Republican, of course.

A conservative, of course. Who loves Jesus. Clinging to his religion and his guns...

So the next time you are at a ball game look for veterans during the National Anthem.

They'll be the ones saluting.

Inhofe Legislation Allows Veterans to Salute the Flag

By Ryan Cassin,
Thursday July 26, 2007
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today praised the
passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans
and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag.

Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in
uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether they can or
should salute the flag.

"The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's military service," Senator Inhofe said.

"Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform.

"Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag. My legislation will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and servicemen alike to salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not.

"I look forward to seeing those who have served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades, and formal events. I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the 25 million veterans in the United States who have served in the military and remain as role models to others citizens.

Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others."

Respect for the Flag

Alert Readers have also noticed that Barack Obama has no American Flag on his campaign aircraft. It is not known if he will remove the flag from Air Force One, if he is elected...

Barack Obama also demonstrates that it is impossible for him to support the troops. He took millions from Bill Ayers, the domestic terrorist who attempted to blow up the Pentagon.

How can Obama support the troops and support a terrorist who tried to kill the troops? Obama is not qualified to be commander in chief.

From NRO,

"There's reason to doubt that oft-repeated pledge of 'supporting the troops' when you've worked for a man who tried to kill the troops."

UPDATE: 23 Dec 2008, New York Times, Obama Tries Out His Salute, By Jeff Zeleny,

KAILUA, Hawaii - He's not the commander in chief yet, but was President-elect Barack Obama briefly practicing his salute on Sunday?

On the first morning of his vacation here, Mr. Obama arrived at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii for his daily workout. As he walked out of the Semper Fit Center, his gray T-shirt soaked in sweat, he lifted his right hand and gave a quick salute to two Marines in fatigues who were standing in the distance.

[Reagan knew how to salute; it was within his experience.
The Cubscout is saluting.
Expect homosexuals in both the military and the Boyscouts
under Obama.]

The brief moment was not captured by cameras. Photographs and video were not permitted to be taken on the military base, according to campaign aides.

Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, opened their day with a 45-minute workout inside a large gymnasium at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which is located on the Mokapu Penninsula on the windward side of Oahu, about 30 minutes outside Honolulu. It is sunny and warm here, a world away, at least in terms of the weather, from Chicago.

reagan_salutes_military.jpg
Saul Alinsky was Obama's mentor who taught Rules for Radicals and how to be community activists. One of Alinsky's rules was that the activists' tactics had to be within the experience of the participants. Obama, like most liberals, doesn't care for the military: it is outside his experience.

Alert Readers well know that Reagan served in uniform, like most patriots, in WWII.

Abortion, Barack Obama & Bill Maher;
Charmaine on Politically Incorrect

October 10, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Bill Maher doesn't care much for babies. And less for marriage.

Charmaine on PI
with (the liberal) Bishop Spong.
Part One, circa 2002
Charmaine made over a dozen appearances on his old Politically Incorrect show.

So all our paths have crossed a time or two in the Green Room in his LA studio.

Usually after Your Business Blogger® just changed a stinky diaper on one of the infant Penta-Posse .

I probably did not make a compelling case for fatherhood...

Anyway.

Charmaine did work on Bill Maher's eternal perspective.

At one point Maher asked us, not rhetorically, "So what is death; a dirt nap?"

Maher sums up neatly the atheist's worldview: there is no God, no Heaven.

No Hell.

At death, it all ends on this celestial sphere. A dirt nap in a grave.

Dinesh D'Souza addresses atheism in his New York Times best seller, What's So Great About Christianity?,

From page 274,

What's So Great
About Christianity?
"If sex is unhooked from the old moral restraints [marriage], there are going to be unwanted pregnancies [babies]. Here we get to atheism's second sacrament, which is abortion. [The first sacrament is orgasm.] The real horror of abortion is not that a woman kills an unborn child

but

that a woman kills her own unborn child. [Emphasis mine.]

The guilt in doing this, for all morally healthy persons, can only be tremendous.

So it is necessary for atheism to pave the way for abortion with a clear conscience.

The first step is to get rid of God, because then there is no spirit of the dead child to disturb the conscience, no hell to pay for violating the commandment against the deliberate taking of life."

Politically Incorrect,
Part 2
One pregnancy in five ends in a miscarriage.

Charmaine and I had one. We still dream of that baby. Now safe on the other side.

The death still hurts and time does heal. But how much more would the hurt be if the mother was responsible for the loss of the baby?

How much more the pain if the mother murdered her baby?

The guilt these women feel must be horrendous.

Can Obama feel no pain?

I will take their heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh.

The Obama Cult Song

The following video clip is based on the actual Obama-cult song recorded by (non-aborted) children who were manipulated into supporting a presidential candidate...and, of course, a clip from the famous movie "Cabaret."

This might be a more accurate representation than the letter sent to the Americans United for Life office in Chicago this week. From the Party of Death.

Gianna Jessen,
abortion survivor
Charmaine and Your Business Blogger(R) have run a number of marathons. Charmaine always cries the last 4 miles. It always hurts -- both the physical and mental. Real Pain.

But at least Charmaine's mom didn't try to murder her...

Gianna Jessen is an abortion survivor and also runs marathons. It takes her 8 hours. (If we were on the same course, she would be the only one behind me and Charmaine.)

Watch Gianna's 30 second video

Gianna needs a third of a day to complete the 26.2 miles because she has, as she says, "the gift of cerebral palsy."

It is a "gift" because the alternative, the intention of the mother and her "doctor" was death for Gianna.

It is not known if the "doctor" is a Democrat. But abortion is a sacrament of The Party of Death.

Gianna lived to tell her story, was adopted, and is an advocate for Infant Born Alive protections.

Management Training at Leadership Institute

September 1, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Your Business Blogger(R) just returned from meeting a number of conservative friends in Minneapolis-St. Paul in preparation for the GOP convention. It was exciting to talk with the good-guys from across the country especially during the Palin pick for VP.

I ran into my good friend Morton Blackwell who has run conservative politics in Virginia for decades and heads up the Leadership Institute in Arlington, Virginia.

Recently, I was honored to give a brief presentation on management to LI. The overview requested was on Managing Management Time(TM) created and developed by The William Oncken Corporation.

LI also asked about some time management techiques and I certainly obliged.

But.

But Alert Readers will know that Managing Management Time(tm) is a philosophy created to teach managers to be more effective; to control events. MMT is NOT a time management course.

The briefing is divided into four short segments.

Freedom of Conscience? Homosexuals Question Medical Care Freedom

August 19, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Your Business Blogger(R) once worked in medical device start-ups teaching new surgical procedures to clinicians.

My physicians were constantly demanding the latest data on patient care and what would work best to improve patient care.

They taught me that they were held to higher standards because the clinical community was the steward of the public's trust.

When a person is hurting, trust is the currency of the care giver.

The patient must believe that the doctor or nurse sincerely believes that the care given is the best -- and that the care giver would not violate the trust of the patient or the care givers' own conscience.
The public well understands that if a doctor will not violate his own conscience, he will not violate the patient.

This conscience clause of the medical community is being attacked by the homosexual activists. Homosexuals are demanding elective procedures -- non-life saving interventions -- medical attention that would violate the conscience of some clinicians.

And this is bad for business. Homosexuals are attempting to equate race with sexual preferences: attempting to make homosexuality a civil right.

The homosexual marketing campaign might be gaining traction in the courts -- but not with voters, not with legislators not with common sense.

An African-American will always be black; he has no choice and cannot stop being black.
A homosexual may return to hertosexuality; he has a choice and can stop being homosexual.

African-Americans are of a particular race from conception. Homosexuals make a decision well after birth. They are not born in that state. There is no homosexual gene in the human DNA. Race is not equal to homosexuality.

Look for more cases like this one in California where the homosexual activists are looking for businesses to take to court. Your business might be next.

California Supreme Court Ruling Threatens Medical Care and Religious FreedomBy Matthew Eppinette | August 18, 2008

Chicago, Illinois -- The California Supreme Court today ruled that patient demand for nonessential, elective care trumps the freedom of conscience of physicians and their ability to practice medicine in accordance with their religious or moral beliefs.

Denise Burke, Vice President & Legal Director of Americans United for Life (AUL), said, "This ruling will deny physicians and other professionals the ability to freely exercise their religious convictions."

Added Burke, "By forcing healthcare professionals to choose between conscience and career, we will lose doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who are already in short supply."

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D., President and CEO of AUL added, "Medical experts already project that existing shortages of nurses, physicians, and pharmacists will soon worsen, failing to meet future healthcare needs. Legal action to compel healthcare providers to participate in procedures to which they conscientiously object threatens to make the already dangerous situation disastrous."

Mailee Smith, AUL Staff Counsel, said, "It defies common sense that a patient would want a doctor to violate his or her conscience in practicing medicine. A diminished physician population is not good for medical care."

The case -- North Coast Women's Care Medical Group v. Superior Court of San Diego County (Benitez) - involves a situation where artificial insemination was not provided due to the marital status of the patient (Ms. Benitez).

Ms. Benitez filed suit arguing that she was not provided the procedure because she is a lesbian. However, the physicians testified that the real issue was her marital status, and that they would not have provided artificial insemination to any single woman.

Ultimately, Ms. Benitez received the procedure from another physician after receiving a referral from the objecting physicians (who paid the additional costs she incurred).

AUL filed an amicus brief in the California Supreme Court on behalf of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Physicians for Life, arguing that federal and state law as well as the ethics standards of major medical organizations support the physicians' right to conscientiously object to performing certain nonessential, elective medical procedures that conflict with physicians' religious and moral beliefs.

Obama & Abortion: Are the Numbers Up or Down?
Charmaine in NRO

August 18, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Obama is the smartest man in the room. I know this is true because his campaign staff told me so.

During the Iowa Caucuses, Your Business Blogger(R), Charmaine and Penta-Posse stayed at the same hotel as many of the other presidential candidate staffers.

We all often talked in the elevators or at the coffee bar. The Obama staff would remind us that Obama, the smart academic law professor (for 12 years!) was brilliant and well briefed...of course.

This made Obama's statement at Saddleback all the more interesting. He said that abortions have not gone down in the last eight years.

Abortions, in fact have declined over the last eight years.

Did Obama, the smartest man in the room, not know this simple fact? Was he poorly briefed?

Or did Obama, with the best staff money can buy, know the truth and say otherwise?

Was Obama being duplicitous a politician from Chicago, or perhaps he cannot remember a simple fact that he volunteered?

Charmaine was at Rick Warren's Saddleback church for the civil questioning and examines Obama's contradiction in an article up on National Review Online.

She reviews Obama's new marketing and messaging campaign.

Absolute Reduction
Barack Obama and abortion
.

By Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

Milling around the media room after the Saddleback Forum, I learned that while John McCain was onstage talking with Rick Warren, Barack Obama was sitting down backstage to an interview with David Brody of CBN News. Brody took the opportunity to press Obama on the issue of his record of opposition to legally protecting babies who are born alive after an abortion.

Obama became visibly irritated and replied to Brody: "I hate to say that people are lying, but here's a situation where folks are lying."

Read the rest here.

Americans United for Life President Charmaine Yoest to Attend Saddleback Civil Forum

August 15, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Your Business Blogger(R) sat in a meeting with Pastor Rick Warren in Your Nation's Capital a few months ago. The guy knows his politics and the machinery and machinations of the sausage making of grinding out law.

So we all were a bit surprised when Warren was planning to give B. Hussein Obama a forum to talk about his political strengths: solving social problems with taxpayer dollars.

John McCain will also be in attendance. But in any debate about 'caring' and spending programs to prove one's compassion, the Dems will always win.

Rick Warren does bill the event as a chance for the candidates to talk about their leadership styles, track records, character and compassion.

But there must be no mistaking Rick Warren's mission: He wants more government money to spend on AIDS and poverty. Warren is not merely pro-life but much, much more -- he is, he says, "Whole Life."

And Warren will accomplish this even if it takes your "Whole Paycheck."

Rick Warren sat at the feet of the great management consultant, teacher and writer Peter Drucker for 20 years. Drucker was a devout believer in Jesus Christ and ran a regular bible study and advised pastors on church management.

Drucker was convinced that the private sector -- the non-profits -- were the best vehicle to solve social ills. Government does a poor job of caring for the poor.

I think Drucker would be disappointed in his student, Rick Warren, even with his 23,000 member church.

Charmaine will be in Warren's Church for the debate and will work to keep abortion and infanticide in the conversation as one of the clear differences between McCain and Obama.

If you are in LA and might be at the debate, please give Charmaine a call.

The press release,

AUL President Dr. Charmaine Yoest to Attend Saddleback Civil Forum, Will be Available for Interviews

Last update: 5:55 p.m. EDT Aug. 15, 2008
LOS ANGELES, Aug 15, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ --

Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President of Americans United for Life, will attend the Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency, Saturday, August 16, 2008, in Lake Forest, California. This will be the first public forum between the two candidates.

In the discussions leading up to the event, one topic has been consistently minimized: abortion.

Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, has said he will be more interested in "uniting" questions, and has suggested he will stick to topics such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, climate change, and human rights.

However, recent reports that the Democratic Party has modified its platform language regarding abortion make the issue particularly relevant and timely. The conversation is certain to continue with the addition of a statement supporting both Roe v. Wade and "a woman's decision to have a child."

Dr. Yoest said, "to try to establish a moral equivalency between motherhood and abortion is offensive to millions of voters."

"Abortion remains a key issue for millions of American voters. I hope the candidates will engage this important issue at the forum," added Yoest.

Dr. Yoest will be available for interviews immediately following the event.

Charmaine Named President and CEO of
Americans United for Life

aul_logo.jpgPRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Media Contact: Matthew Eppinette
Matthew.Eppinette@AUL.org
312.568.4701

Chicago, Illinois -- Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D., a well-known pro-family leader, author, and media commentator, takes the helm of Americans United for Life (AUL) as president and chief executive officer on August 11, 2008.

Robert Harvey, Chairman of the AUL Board of Directors said, "Dr. Yoest's experience in pro-life issues, in political strategy, and in organizational communications make her the ideal person to lead the team at AUL in taking on challenges and capitalizing on opportunities in the present legal and political climate."

The U.S. Supreme Court's 2007 Gonzales decision upholding the Federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act marked the beginning of a new era in the battle over life issues. In short, the decision dramatically opened up new doors for protecting life through the law.

In striking contrast, the U.S. Congress and five states this year considered Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) legislation, which would wipe away virtually every law on abortion nationwide, allowing abortion-on-demand in all nine months of pregnancy for any reason, without any restrictions.

"It is a great honor to join AUL, an organization with a remarkable reputation for excellence and achievement," said Yoest. "AUL has been involved in every pro-life case before the U.S. Supreme Court since Roe v. Wade, and AUL-authored legislation is in place all around the country, saving lives every day."

Yoest added, "I look forward to exciting days ahead, building on this rich legacy and working to increase the legal protection of human lives."

Most recently, Yoest served as vice-president of communications at the Family Research Council, one of the largest pro-family public policy organizations in the country.

Her political experience spans working in the Reagan White House to serving as a Senior Advisor to the 2008 Huckabee for President Campaign.

A regular political commentator, Dr. Yoest has appeared on all of the major networks and cable outlets. In print, she is quoted regularly and has been published widely. She is also the author of Mother in the Middle (HarperCollins), an examination of work/family and childcare policy.

Yoest holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She lives with her husband, Jack, and their five children in the Washington, D.C. area.

Dr. Yoest succeeds Clarke D. Forsythe, Esq., a 22-year AUL veteran who served as interim president and who will continue in senior leadership of the organization.

About Americans United for Life

Two Sides of Advertising: Very Good & Very Bad

July 25, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

A common question from my business students is "Why are some ads so bad?"

It does seem odd. Why would marketing managers (Budget? What budget?) spent millions for what seems to be a bad impression. Or simply to shock.

At times marketers will deliberately make an awful advertisement to make it memorable. So that a consumer walking down a grocery store aisle will remember a product. But sometimes marketers have gone too far.

So Your Business Blogger(R) has assembled two sets of ads: Good and Bad.

Let's start with the good. The motto in my business is Delectare et Docere, To Please and To Instruct.

The first set of advertisements -- or edu-tainment -- is To Please and To Remind. The Georgia-Pacific paper company did a series of Brawny Man ads a few years ago, still alive on YouTube. A bit longer at some 120 seconds on the web which is a destination that viewers tune in and view with a purpose, which is to please. Even a novice will notice that the target market is women. Alert Readers will notice the early 'product placement' in the ad.

There's lot's more Brawny Man -- but let us begin our descent from good to bad.

Some marketing gurus have crossed over to the dark side with dark ads. Ancient Jewish tradition commands the faithful to imagine no evil. "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is." And "Guard your heart, it is the wellspring of life."

It is a sound life strategy to permit only good inside your circle of friends, your house, your head. Imagine world peace, as the new-agers would say.

But some ad messages put darkness on display.

Charmaine recently appeared on Fox to debate shock advertising. (Your Business Blogger(R) married way over his head...)

Charmaine_Yoest_Fox_News_Live060306.jpg

Charmaine on an earlier FOX appearance
Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D., appeared on Fox News on March 1, 2008 to debate the issue of edgy ads and to discuss the prevalence of shock-style advertising in the media.

Charmaine debated Greg Muehler from Serve Marketing who produced some of the shock ads.

FOX, fair and balanced is a family network and showed only those mildest of ads -- Steve McQueen's Bullet had more violent car chase scenes. Or The French Connection. The examples are not too bad.

But bad is coming at the end of this post.

###

Thank you (foot)notes:

Has some advertising crossed the line? Shock ads linked below.
Caution: Might be safe for work -- but not for kids.

From Newsweek, This Is Your Brain on Scary Ads -- Are these graphic PSAs inspiring or offensive? You decide.,

The image is meant to shock: a little girl's face atop a woman's body, cleavage spilling over a low-cut cocktail dress. ...The ads are disturbing, to put it mildly. But more disturbing, its creators say, is what they're trying to combat: 71 percent of teen pregnancies in inner-city Milwaukee are the result of statutory rape. ... But industry experts say the campaign represents a genre of public-service advertising that's becoming more lurid than ever.

Shock advertising is an age-old gimmick. But compared with milder fare from years past ("This is your brain on drugs"), today's imagery is "like a sledgehammer to the face," says Steve Hall, founder of the industry blog AdRants. For instance: the ad displayed above-an anti-drunk-driving spot for Arrive Alive-featuring a scantily clad girl collapsed in a men's bathroom. Experts have called it muddled and pointlessly provocative.

Alert Reader Dr. Kalynne Pudner, at Auburn University and teaches Biz Ethics, points us to this analysis by By Jeffrey A. Tucker at Mises, as in Ludwig von,

But why must it be tacky and unbearable to so many of us? Well, let's be blunt: business is trying to reach the masses. Mises explains:
"Business propaganda must be obtrusive and blatant. It is its aim to attract the attention of slow people, to rouse latent wishes, to entice men to substitute innovation for inert clinging to traditional routine. In order to succeed, advertising must be adjusted to the mentality of the people courted. It must suit their tastes and speak their idiom. Advertising is shrill, noisy, coarse, puffing, because the public does not react to dignified allusions. It is the bad taste of the public that forces the advertisers to display bad taste in their publicity campaigns. The art of advertising has evolved into a branch of applied psychology, a sister discipline of pedagogy. Like all things designed to suit the taste of the masses, advertising is repellent to people of delicate feeling."

A sister discipline of pedagogy? Yes indeed it is, and it is also art, and those with "delicate feeling" need to learn to appreciate it for what it is. They don't have to believe a word of it. Decline to drink the potion to make you thin. Refuse the breakfast that will make you concentrate. Eschew the hand cream that will restore moisture. Be as skeptical as you want and, instead, save every penny. Turn off the television if you hate it and sit in your perfect environment and listen to Gregorian chant.

Newsweek continues,

Still, deterrence by disgust can work. In 2006, a series of Volkswagen safety ads drew attention for showing its cars in heart-stopping traffic accidents; within weeks, sales inquiries were up. A more recent ad for Canadian workplace safety features a glowing young chef describing her fiancé, whom she'll never marry, she says, because she's about to be in a "terrible accident." She then slips and scorches her face with a cauldron of boiling water. ... "Some small amount of discomfort is worth it if it creates positive change," says Gary Mueller, founder of Serve, the agency behind the statutory-rape ads. The small discomfort, though, is getting bigger.

The Obama Abortion Marketing Machine

July 11, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Your Business Blogger(R) teaches business, marketing and management at the local college.

I like to remind students and clients that the hardest product to sell is an intangible, an idea. The easier product to pitch has tangible characteristics -- it has a form that can be introduced through the senses, a product that can be seen and touched.

sonogram_side_by_side.jpgOne of the most interesting marketing campaigns of the century is the promotion of abortion as 'choice' and 'reproductive freedom.'

And for many, abortion has become a vote-changing issue during the current presidential campaign.

To learn more about this interesting abortion-vote market segment, I stepped out of the DC summer heat in Your Nation's Capital and sat in on an off-the-record meeting on abortion polling data for battle ground states.

The confidential numbers revealed that 57% of the public was self-identified as Pro-Life.

This raised two marketing questions:

1) Why is Obama still actively embracing an abortion position? And,

2) How did the country move from supporting abortion rights to Pro-Life?

I was curious about the Obama Abortion Marketing Machine. He is in favor of abortion and in denying medical treatment of some infants born alive. He aggressively supports the feminist's power position of control of a mother over her baby.

Power is an intangible and intangibles are normally a 'difficult sell' as we old sales guys are wont to say. It seems odd that any seller of public policy would take pride in working this hard.

But this intangible is what has sold in the past -- a woman's complete control over her body and absolute power over her destiny, even if this meant killing her unborn baby. Power sells and people will pay most anything to get it, use it and to project the appearance of power.

It was absolute power. And Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

But it was not Lord Acton's theorem that changed the mind of the American public. It was a picture. Or rather two pictures:

A) If a woman sees a picture, a sonogram of her baby, she will not have an abortion.

B) The Chicago hospital room where babies can be left to die.

Nurse Jill Stanek has the story and original reporting of the Chicago hospital's "abortion_born_alive_comfort_room_stanek.jpgComfort Room" where babies born alive are left to die without medical intervention. She has more pictures.

Polite society might call this 'infanticide.' Calling the venue a "Comfort Room" is clever marketing. Like "Pro-Choice." A case study on word framing to sell. Brilliant.

But the new pictures are powerful images that can now sell the product: a child.

The tangible child is trumping the intangible power.

This provides a clear choice this presidential election between a women's power and a person's right to life.

McCain is Pro-Life.

Obama has a clear pro-abortion position: He would sign the Planned Parenthood backed Freedom of Choice Act which codifies Roe v Wade:

Media Alert: Penta-Posse at Presser; Repeal NEA Resolution I - 15

July 2, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

"It is something you only want to do once," said Gary Bauer.

"What's that?" I ask. "Running for president?"

"No," he says. "Falling backwards off the platform."

Alert Readers will well remember Gary Bauer falling off the podium while flipping flapjacks on his run for president. It was funny and no one got hurt.

Except, maybe, his chances for president...

The Baby-Boo, the caboose on the Penta-Posse, made a similar slip and fell off the elevated platform at a press conference today.

Falling is something everyone has to do. Baby-Boo has got his 'falling' out of the way -- and is now ready to run without a slip for president.

Baby-Boo may not be 35 years old, but, then, he's not that much younger than Obama.

Gary Bauer still laughs about his tumble and the uncertainly all presidential campaigns generate on the trail. Gary is a class act. (Your Business Blogger(R) would still be mad and a-blaming someone...)

Watch Baby-Boo's fall and his quick recovery. Click here for the Family Research Council site and then click on Judy Bruns's talk.

MEDIA ALERT: Charmaine On CNN: Obama and the Evangelical Vote

June 27, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

charmaine_barney_frank_ethics_in_america_yoest.JPGCharmaine is taping an interview for CNN American Morning on the Senator Barack Obama flirtation with Bible believing, Jesus loving, Evangelicals who hold for the Right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D. is pictured at left during a taping of Ethics in America with Barney Frank(D).

Obama has a chance with some church goers. About 30% of self-identified Christians voted for Bill Clinton.

Obama believes reporter Michael Weisskopf who wrote that members of the Christian Right are, "largely poor, uneducated, and easy to command."

So while the poor impoverished are clinging to guns and religion, how would the elitist Obama lead the nation?

1) Bring legislation forcing citizens to embrace homosexual demands: Homosexual Marriage and the Homosexuals in the military.

2) Raise taxes.

3) Raise gas prices by punishing oil companies. He refuses to explore and drill for energy.

4) Demand that some babies born alive be left to die.

5) Force citizens how and what to think. Mark Steyn is being sued under hate-crimes law in Canada for his writing about Islam in America Alone, a must read. Barack X. Obama supports this mind-thought control through legislation.

The ObamaNation will force churches and the Boy Scouts to hire Homosexuals.

The ObamaNation will force government-controlled doctors on the country.

The ObamaNation will place women in land combat and in submarines.

The ObamaNation will take more of the citizen's money in taxes and fees.

The ObamaNation will force these government doctors to perform abortions.

The ObamaNation will force babies born during a botched abortion (re: live birth) to die.

The ObamaNation will continue the African-American genocide thru Planned Parenhood.

The clip will air next week. Hit times will be announced. Please let us know what you think. Comments are now open.

###

Thank you (foot)notes,

Obama may be a disciple of Jesus Christ, but he doesn't understand the Bible. And after attending Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years, it figures. For example, the Old Testament dietary restrictions no longer apply. This is a "new" teaching in the New Testament that is different from the Old. Obama is going to be confused about these Old and New Testament issues:

Dietary restrictions.
Circumcision.
Animal sacrifice.

Homosexual abominations remain in effect.

Obama is fuzzy on his Biblical interpretations. And a bit confused on secular matters -- but he is consistent with the old-style liberal world view.

Your Business Blogger(R) looks forward to the continuing debate between Obama and Dr. Dobson of Focus on the Family.

Obama might come to Jesus yet...

Voters will not answer the ObamaNation altar call, Lord willing.

Obama: Abortion & The Death of a Live Birth

June 26, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

fetusat18weeks.jpg"Let all the babies be born.

Then let us drown those we do not like."

GK Chesterton, Babies and Distributism, GK's Weekly, 11/12/32

GK Chesterton writes a prophesy: He sees evil and wants it to stop --

Barack Obama writes a policy: He sees no evil and wants it to continue.

Obama is the full-spectrum abortion candidate.

Abortion thru nine months
Abortion at birth
Abortion after birth

Obama demands that some babies born alive be left to die.

Obama makes clear what he will do about the killing of babies -- born and pre-born,

"Thirty-five years after the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, it's never been more important to protect a woman's right to choose. Last year, the Supreme Court decided by a vote of 5-4 to uphold the Federal Abortion Ban, and in doing so undermined an important principle of Roe v. Wade: that we must always protect women's health.

obama_wiping_out_America_one_baby.jpg"With one more vacancy on the Supreme Court, we could be looking at a majority hostile to a women's fundamental right to choose for the first time since Roe v. Wade. The next president may be asked to nominate that Supreme Court justice. That is what is at stake in this election.

MEDIA ALERT: Press Conference at Teacher Convention, July 2nd

June 24, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

yoest_gandy_altercation_6panel.JPG

Your Business Blogger(R) has a degree in Education and was pressured by the National Education Association (NEA) to join the union years ago.

"The NEA is great when you get sued," said the (very large) union rep.

I declined to teach and went into a less violent business: The Army.

The NEA is having their convention in Your Nation's Capital next week. On July 2nd Pro-Life Educators and Students (PLEAS) will be conducting a rally at the Washington Convention Center from 10:00am and 2:00pm.

This press conference would have my attention even if I didn't have 5 kids in the public schools or if Charmaine wasn't speaking.

If Charmaine is speaking, you'll want to listen. And this time we own the mic.

Charmaine is pictured above elbowing aside pro-abortion NOW President Kim Gandy at a open press conference in 2005. This is the only Women in Combat of which conservatives would approve.

PLEAS Coordinator Bob Pawson says, "Pro-Life teachers, school employees, parents, and students are invited to come pray and peacefully picket...Hillary Clinton and/or Barack Obama will surely address NEA's 9,000 Delegates, as they did last year."

Pro-Life teachers are concerned that their teacher union dues support and promote abortion and political candidates who tolerate the holocaust of the unborn.

Pawson explains, "Late-term abortionist George Tiller spoke at NEA headquarters for the [pro-abortion] Feminist Majority Foundation's Leadership Conference in March 2008." Watch the YouTube video here. Warning: graphic pictures of dead children.

No pro-life speakers or political candidates are supported by the NEA.

NEA union President, Reg Weaver is backing Obama; "every public school employee needs to get squarely behind the Obama candidacy."

The union tells us,

"The National Education Association supports...the right to reproductive freedom" -- the abortion code-words.

The "NEA supports the ...Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision which now permits abortion on demand through nine months of pregnancy. The NEA is silent on the Dred Scott decision which also codified the ownership of one human being by another. The Dred Scott slave owner is the Roe v Wade feminist.

UPDATE: Press Conference at the Family Research Council building at 9:30 to 10:15am, then on to the presser at the Convention Center at 10:30am.

MEDIA ALERT: Charmaine Soundbite CNN: Homosexual Marriage, The Problem.

June 16, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

charmaine_yoest_cnn_headline_abortion_card.jpg

Charmaine on an earlier
CNN appearance
Charmaine will be recording a taped interview to appear on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

She will be discussing the recent court actions in California on homosexual marriage.

One of the questions these court rulings have is to remind us that we have allowed ourselves to be governed by judges. Five Guys now rule America: An oligarchy.

When Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government our infant nation had created for ourselves, he replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

***

So what is the problem with homosexual marriage? Maggie Gallagher tells us that the homosexual activists are equating homosexual preferences with racial civil rights. Conservatives who disagree with homosexuals are called bigots and worse.

There is no free and open and honest debate with the members of the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). (Motto: Sex by 8 or it's too late.)

Just as racists these days cannot get, say, an FCC license, Gallagher says that the homosexuals will make it impossible for "homo-phobes" to be a part of the mainstream of society. "Gay Pride Parades" will be considered first normal then mandatory. And you better be there with your children, smiling. At all the nekked men.

John McCormack writes in The Weekly Standard, May 26, 2008,

...[T]wo Christian doctors [in California] are being sued for refusing to artificially inseminate a lesbian, and last summer four firefighters sued the city of San Diego on sexual harassment grounds after they were required to participate in a gay pride parade over their objections. How would California deal with doctors who refused to treat an African American? Revoke their licenses. How would San Diego treat firefighters who objected to marching in a Martin Luther King Jr. parade? Fire them.

Is this self-governance as envisioned by our Founding Fathers? Nope.

The homosexuals are on a marketing campaign using marriage and the military through the courts for acceptance.

Robert P. George, Ph.D. believes that we should have open vigorous debates on marriage, abortion, stem cells; the big moral issues of our day. George writes in First Things, January, 2008,

We will be advised to frame arguments in coded language so as not to scare off the soccer moms or whoever is playing their role in the next election cycle.

All of this must be resisted...

The question, then, is not whether there are truths about such things as the morality of abortion and the nature of marriage; the question in each case is, What is true?

The homosexual activists do not want truth or government by the citizens. Liberals and the homosexuals in the Obama-Nation are happy with the dictatorship of the courts.

Most people want the self governance of a constitutionally-limited republic -- protected by good Republicans...

CNN is attempting to open up the conversation on homosexual marriage. We are anxious to see how they edit the tape.

Hit time for Charmaine is between 4 and 6pm today. Tune in and let us know what you think.

Defending The Family 2008 & Beyond

June 5, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine will be in New Hampshire tomorrow, Friday the 6th to give a talk to strengthen the conservative, pro-life movement.

See the Family Forum Flyer,

Learn how to recapture Traditional American

FRIDAY, JUNE 6 – 9AM-3PM*
WHAT: A grassroots training seminar designed to educate and equip citizens to promote traditional family values in your community. Learn practical how-tos for effective communication and creating and managing your message to be persuasive in the public debate!
WHERE: Thomas More College
Merrimack, NH

Charmaine will be speaking on the power of words to frame a debate. She noticed that Your Business Blogger(R) has a line drawing of the HMS Victory over his desk; a profile of the body of the ship that Lord Nelson made famous in the sea battle at Trafalgar against the French; against Napoleon. The English won, as usual.

VICTORY. There is no ship in the Royal Navy named "Success." And this is where President Bush gets the Global War on Terror wrong: Men don't die in combat for "Success in Iraq." They will sacrifice and die for "Victory."

We don't have "Success in Jesus." We have Victory.

The wordsmith knows the difference. (And the Christian...)

Charmaine will also speak on Bimbos. If you are anywhere in the Northeast, go visit and sey hey to Charmaine.

###
Thank you (foot)notes:

"Bimbos" as we are using it, is the intellectual property of Merrie Spaeth. Another brilliant women who knows the power of words. And like Charmaine, she worked for Ronald Reagan, of course.

Spaeth reminds professionals and public speakers to always recite the positive and to never repeat the negative accusation -- usually advanced by a commie reporter. Public affairs should only be handled by professionals.

When I say 'public affairs' I am not speaking of Bill Clinton's weaknesses...

See Indra Nooyi: $5 Million Gets You Bimbos . . . and Boycotts. . .

Most Americans think the country is on the wrong track. Representatives like Heather Wilson may have been a part of the deterioration of the GOP branding and why citizens are dismayed: Republicans are not behaving like Conservatives. Wilson she wanted women in combat. She advanced abortion. This is not a conservative. Wilson just lost her primary race. Thank goodness.

Watch Charmaine's debate with Heather Wilson(R) from New Mexico a few years ago on women in combat. Ignore the Army women exposing their breasts.

More at the jump.

USS Scorpion Lost 40 Years On Eternal Patrol

May 26, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

submarine_service_poster.jpg

In Remembrance of
those in the
Submarine Service
40 Years ago the USS Scorpion was due in Norfolk, VA. She never returned.

She is, as the veterans say, on Eternal Patrol.

John Howland at USNA-AT-LARGE has set up a group for the boat,

Dedicated to and in honor of the 99 U.S. Navy submariners who perished in the loss of SCORPION in May 1968. The 40th Anniversary of that tragedy ...[is] (May 2008), yet the cause(s) of the loss remain a complete mystery.
scorpion_40_years_eternal_patrol.jpg

USS Scorpion
40 Years on Eternal Patrol

This lack of clarity and closure has created a void into which charlatans now have full play in creating bogus theories for profit.

This unsatisfactory situation may result in the SCORPION 99 going into history forever at the mercy of the unscrupulous.

The solution that this group will work toward will be to encourage the U.S. Navy to, at the very least, put to rest the loss scenarios which have MINIMAL TO NO PROBABILITY of having actually occurred.

Your Business Blogger(R) wrote an article for National Review Online about those left behind from the loss of the USS Scorpion.

Five Days in May: The loss of the USS Scorpion.

By Jack Yoest

Yolanda Mazzuchi was about the prettiest girl in our school class. Our dads were in the Navy, often gone for months at a time. And they would be welcomed home at dockside with cheers and homemade signs. These gatherings at the D&S Piers at the Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia, were a regular part of our lives growing up. Families often took children out of school to celebrate a ship’s homecoming.

At 1 in the afternoon on Monday, May 27, 1968, at the height of the Cold War the USS Scorpion was due in port.

Yolanda didn’t know it then, but her dad was already dead....

Teamwork & Rowing: 2008 National Scholastic Championship, Oak Ridge, TN

Building Teams and Teamwork is the mantra of the modern manager.

How does a manager take a group of talented individual contributors and motivate them to, well, pull together as one unit in the same boat?

Last year The Chronicle of Higher Education lurched into the truth in an article All for One.

It was a story on rowing.

And in it Your Business Blogger(R) read a business lesson.

For both my business practice and The Dreamer's crewing at her high school.

The Oak Ridge Rowing Association and the Scholastic Rowing Association of America is sponsoring the 2008 National Scholastic Championships in Oak Ridge, TN. Several thousand visitors will go down to the river and pray for blue skies and flat water.

We are packing up the monster Huck-a-truck and the Penta-Posse (minus The Dreamer traveling with her team) and will gas-guzzle our way to the Volunteer State to watch our girls compete at the regatta.

With a monster carbon footprint.

Listening to the Oak Ridge Boys .

(Ain't America great or what?)

The Women's Freshmen Eight will row at 10:15am on Friday the 23rd. Please check the schedule.

The Women's coach was able to persuade decision makers to allow his team to use the Invictus. A new and faster boat used by upper class men at their high school.

Where tenths of a second determine winners, the perception of crewing a world-class shell can make the difference. If the women think they are faster, they will be.

Rowing is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical.

Apologies to Yogi Berra.

Scholastic Rowing Association

Regatta 2008

Which brings us back to Notes From Academe, in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Writer Scott Smallwood visited the Cambridge University Boat Club in the UK to write about the yearly Oxford-Cambridge competition.

Alert Readers will recall that Charmaine and Your Business Blogger(R) read at Oxford and attended our first rowing event on the narrow creeks that pass for rivers at ox ford.

Duncan Holland, the Cambridge coach with some 20 years experience, helped Dutch rowers to an Olympic medal. He well understands that even though he's got winning seasons, only one race matters as a condition of (enjoyable) employment:

Beat Oxford.

Picking eight rowers seems like an easy task for a coach,

With rowing machines that can spit out reams of numbers about how fast and hard every rower can pull, what's so hard about choosing a team? Why not just pick the eight strongest guys and be done with it? It turns out...that team dynamics are trickier than that. The eight who are eventually chosen will be not necessarily the fastest individual rowers, but the best combination of rowers.

Smallwood continues,

Quintus Travis, a past president of the boat club and now treasurer, puts the mystery more bluntly: "There are always a couple [of rowers] who are stunted, but somehow they make the boats go faster."

The Brits can be brutal.

Mr. de Rond is a professor at Cambridge's Judge Business School and is studying the Cambridge athletes and the team and the coach,

...de Rond sees the answer [of the faster boats] in how team members bond. He draws a comparison from a 2005 paper in the Harvard Business Review by Tiziana E. Casciaro, of Harvard, and Miguel Sousa Lobo, of Duke University. The pair studied likability versus competence. Their work boils down to this: When choosing whom to work with, do you pick the lovable fool or the competent jerk? People, especially managers, often say they value competence above all. But in practice, they'll often trade some of that competence for likability. And that may not be so dumb.
Mr. de Rond doesn't think any of the Cambridge rowers are incompetent. No matter how lovable you are, you can't get in this boat unless you're a top-notch rower.

But here the Cambridge rowers become a self-directed team. Something business managers talk about but seldom see,

When the tentative roster was chosen," says [de Rond], Dan wasn't originally on the list." The other men successfully lobbied the coaches to put him in the varsity boat, even though by the numbers he was a borderline choice. Now, he says, [Dan's] social skills -- he's the class clown, really -- have improved the psychology of the entire team.

Like the coaches, this is where managers work their magic. To assemble a team that maximizes strengths and minimizes weaknesses, as Peter Drucker said.

So the women's coach got a better boat for his team. Coaches and managers get paid to figure out the immeasurables; the intangibles that go into building a winning team.

This Freshman Women's coach has got it figured out.

If he reported to me, I'd get him a raise...

BUILDING BLOCKS A base training session “addresses fitness, feeling and rhythm,” Charley Butt said. As with a runner, he said, what matters is “how a rower gets in the miles.” He advised rowing for 25 minutes at 75 percent of full pressure at a stroke rate of 16 to 20. Then, he said, paddle for 5 to 10 minutes and repeat. Maintaining a low stroke rate allows you to concentrate on technique.

Hillary Goes To Church, Klings To Her Religion

May 20, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Your Business Blogger(R) just received an email from Alert Reader Janice who tells us about Hillary's presence at the State Street United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, KY,

I just received an email letting me know that, yes indeed, the Paul Fryman who was our former student at Asbury was the pastor who preached at State Street UMC in Bowling Green, KY this past Sunday when Hillary was there. He has been the subject of abuse because his sermon was on adultery. He has received hate mail and all sorts of attacks – including accusations of being a pedophile and needing therapy, etc. He has chosen (wisely) not to react or respond at all. Paul is a humble, guileless servant of Christ.

The service and Paul have been distorted unbelievably.

Here are some facts, in case someone asks you:

· Hillary's people called Paul and told him she would be in his church, it was not a request.

· He told her people that they were in a series of sermons and that the morning sermon would be on adultery from the Sermon on The Mount, making sure she knew what she would hear, the bulletins were already printed.

· Paul’s sermon was 12 minutes (not the hour-long that was in the press – that was the length of the whole service)

· Paul acknowledged the presidential candidate’s presence in the service (some reports said that she was ignored and unwelcomed).

· Reporters sat in the service with their laptops – did not participate in the service respectfully.

· His sermon will be put online as soon as possible so that people can judge for themselves. [he called for members of the congregation to make a new commitment to their own marriages and to be aware of the temptations that they face – it was not an attack against Hillary

Simmons, seated next to Chuck Scarborough, dropped the offensive word Monday during a live news tease at about 10:30 p.m. Though she was off camera as a video clip appeared, she was heard saying, "What the f- are you doing?"

She apologized on the 11 p.m. news, saying she was "truly sorry."

Some observers, many of whom regularly use the same word in conversation, speculated that Simmons may have thought the segment was being taped and the word could later be deleted.

Ch. 4 officials would not say whether she was reprimanded for the slip...

Meanwhile, on Tuesday Ch. 4's legal eagles were trying to stop the spread of a clip of Simmons' expletive, citing copyright infringement.

Alert Readers will recall Ronald Reagan's 'mistake' of doing a mike-check with the words, "We begin bombing in five minutes" on what was supposed to be an internal sounding. See The Eighties Club,

Everybody heard about it, but not too many people heard the thing itself: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." Hearing it is indescribably more chilling than reading it on the page. My first chance came a few days after the fact, on KALX-FM, the Berkeley college station. Certain it was a fake, I pulled over at the first phone booth, called, asked what it was. "The real McCoy," said the DJ. I couldn't believe it, and I didn't want to believe it. But they played it straight through the next fifteen minutes, over and over, adding echo and reverb here and there, and by the end I had the Mondale spot designed.

Russia didn't laugh. They thought it was real. And The Berlin Wall Came Down. And so did Mondale...

Dr. Herb London

As you are aware by now, on this Tuesday May 13th the Harbour League will be hosting a talk by the Hudson Institute president and THL board member, Dr. Herb London. In consideration of the attendance of our entire board of trustees, the event will take place at: The Cloisters, 10440 Falls Road in Lutherville, Maryland and not at the Harbour League's office.

The evening will begin at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30pm)with a talk given by Dr. Herb London entitled, "America's Secular Challenge: The Rise of a New National Religion". Dr. London will suggest that the rise of secularism in the United States is a flaccid response to the challenge presented by the fanaticism of radical Islam. In the so-called war of ideas we are handicapped in our ability to thwart the inroads of fanaticism by a reflexive belief in relativism, one dimension of secular humanism.

The rise of secular humanism not only challenges the traditional antecedent of the nation, it is an ineffective response to the challenge of Islam. The result? If you don't know what you believe in, you are unable to defend what is worthwhile. Something that, if understood, can change Maryland for the better.

Following the talk and question and answer session, there will be a dessert reception that will give you a chance to talk with any member of member of the board regarding the movement.

To RSVP to this for this event or to the dinner prior to the talk please visit www.TheHarbourLeague.org or call 410-753-4560.

We look forward to seeing you there.

MEDIA ALERT: Charmaine Quoted in The Wall Street Journal On Abortion Politics & Judges

May 6, 2008 | By Jack Yoest

Charmaine was interviewed by LAURA MECKLER from The Wall Street Journal, McCain Speech to Shed Light On Judicial Philosophy:Social Conservatives Look for Assurance Of Common Agenda, May 6, 2008; Page A8,

In town-hall meetings, Sen. McCain makes a point to explain his positions on terrorism, taxes, the economy, energy and health care. But in his prepared remarks, he never mentions abortion, same-sex marriage, judges or gun rights. When asked, he often responds quickly and moves on.

"Imagine if you were an economic conservative and someone never talked about tax policy unless they were asked about it," said Charmaine Yoest, [Ph.D.] a vice president at the Family Research Council, a conservative advocacy group focused on social issues.

Asked whether she thinks Sen. McCain really cares about the abortion issue, she said, "I don't know, and that's his problem."
